Isn’t our community blessed to have the Bailey House Museum as a hub of local history? Beyond providing a resource for the bygone-giddy, the locale—vibrant green grounds contrasted against the white mortar of the missionary-era house, alive in the sun and pocketed with deep shade—is a pleasure. This Sunday is the perfect opportunity for your ‘ohana to enjoy the museum, as staffers and the Maui Historical Society host their very first ‘Ohana Day festivities. To provide “a unique cultural experience,” says the museum’s executive director Nicole McMullen, the event will feature a special poi pounding demonstration. Keiki 12 and under will receive free admission to the museum (also free on Furlough Fridays), with adults and seniors admitted at half price. Should you wind up catching the Bailey bug, why not join the society? Becoming a member not only helps ensure the society’s survival, but also affords you free admission to the museum, a subscription to the ‘Imi ‘Ike Journal (“to seek knowledge”), 10 percent off classes and lectures as well as at the museum shop (excludes CDs), and (my favorite) a waiver of fees at the Archival Resource Center. For any visit to the Bailey House Museum, be sure to pick up one of their Plant Guides—a 13-stop tour of the grounds’ diverse flora. 244-3326 or www.mauimuseum.org
