The 2009 Maui Healing Garden Festival runs from October 17-25 (see Da Kine Calendar for more). The main event—a Festival Day & Health Expo—slated for Sunday, aims to shine a big green spotlight on traditional, multicultural uses of plants both nutritionally and medicinally, while educating attendees about “organic foods and farming, home garden pharmacies, sustainability, permaculture and edible landscapes.” Mmm… edible landscapes. (My first thought is Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, but I’m sure this version is much better for body and Earth.) The festival is focusing on being a zero-waste event, yet keeps to true festival style as the day is filled with a number of music and dance performances, poetry, educational demos, plenty of healthy grindz, and (my favorite) a book and plant sale. With ‘ohana-friendly activities like coconut lawn bowling, the Sacred Garden Labyrinth and magic by “The Amazing Stuporman,” Neil Bruce, this event cultivates a sound Sunday worth escaping to in this season of scares. hawaiihealinggarden.com, events@hawaiihealthguide.com.
