Last year, MauiTime contributor Rob Parsons wrote a column titled “Eleven Ideas For Fixing Agriculture on Maui.” Like a lot of Parsons’s columns, it was a call to action. Now, the call is being answered. South Maui Sustainability, West Maui Sustainability and Upcountry Sustainability (sensing a trend?) are hosting an event called Maui Growing Local; among the guest speakers will be Parsons, discussing his eleven ideas and, more importantly, ways to implement them. Gerry Ross of Kupa’a Farms will also be on hand along with, presumably, numerous other eco heavyweights (this is your chance to rub green elbows, people). Grinds will be provided via a “locavore-style” potluck, meaning attendees are encouraged to bring dishes featuring mostly local ingredients. “This event is gonna rock the ag community to their roots,” wrote Maury King of South Maui Sustainability in an e-mail. “They will be udderly amazed. They’ll be so hempy to see us.” If the awesomeness of his puns are any indication, you don’t want to miss out. www.southmauisustainability.org
