ISLAND ENERGY INQUIRY – In the drive to explore renewable energy sources, Maui Economic Development Board’s Women In Technology (WIT) program, along with the Office of Naval Research, is announcing a new summer Island Energy Inquiry educator workshop. The curriculum explores wind, solar and geothermal energy resources. Science, math and CTE teachers (5-12 grade) are invited to the two-day workshop of instruction and hands-on activities. SURFRIDER INSTAGRAM CHALLENGE – “Thirsty Thursdays” has taken on a new meaning and Surfrider Foundation invites you to use their Instagram Contest to quench your photo thirst. Every week leading up to International Surfing Day on June 20, those who submit photos will get a chance to win a prize pack and ultimately the grand prize, a Firewire surfboard. Each Wednesday via Surfrider Foundation’s Facebook (and IntlSurfingDay.com) a theme will be posted of the type of images wanted that week. Participants will then need to submit their photo via Instagram (make sure they’re tagged @Surfrider and #ISD). Photos must be submitted between 6am and 3pm PST that Thursday. Isd.surfrider.org.

HAWAIIAN TARO SALE – Got taro? If not, the Maui Nui Botanical Garden’s taro sale is where you will want to be this Friday. The kalo (taro) plant is a traditional source of food sustenance in Hawaii and most notable for its use in poi. Featuring some rare breeds, the garden’s selection will include varieties from the Ele‘ele, Mana, Lehua, Manini, Lauloa, Piko and ‘Ula‘ula families. HELP MANA‘O RADIO AND MAUI ONSTAGE – Come one, come all to an evening benefiting Mana‘o Radio and Maui OnStage. The local broadcasting station and production company serve Maui’s community through educational vignettes and theater programs. 14TH ANNUAL TAIKO FESTIVAL – Taiko means drum in Japanese, has been tied to Chinese origins and was once used as warning in battle. Today, taiko is performed in ensemble format and continues to grow in popularity across the world. Join the Taiko Center of the Pacific Youth Group (TCP-YG) and Maui’s Zenshin Daiko for the Zenshin Daiko’s 14 Annual Taiko Festival. TCP-YG will open with their children’s ensemble boasting high national and international regard. HULIAU YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL FILM FESTIVAL – The Maui Huliau Foundation is presenting the 2013 Huliau Youth Environmental Film Festival. MHF is a non-profit whose goal is to promote and create environmental awareness initiatives geared towards middle school and high school students. The festival will premiere 11 films that were pitched, directed and edited by these students. The films explore environmental issues on Maui and range in topic and style. Films include Eat Local, a documentary following students experiment to eat strictly local and Beyond the Kernel, which follows an animated conversation between a genetically modified corn kernel and an organic one. $10 general/ $5 youth/ $15 door. 6:30pm doors. 7pm show. “WHAT’S GROWING IN YOUR GARDEN?” – The Hawaii Public Library is inviting you to “What’s Growing in Your Garden?” As a fun kick-off to HSPLS 2013 Summer Reading Programs, the Library is hosting artist Chelsea Toia for an afternoon of free art projects themed “Dig into Reading” (Children), “Beneath the Surface” (Teen) and “Groundbreaking Reads” (Adult). Geared towards kids 12 years and up, Toia will conduct a hands-on demonstration with acrylics. The free event invites interested parties to create paintings inspired by a real or imagined garden. 2013 MAUI FILM FESTIVAL – It’s that time again. From Wednesday to Sunday, the Maui Film Festival returns to the sprawling greens of Wailea Gold & Emerald Golf Course, Seaside Cinema (Wailea Beach) and Castle Theater (MACC). Wednesday will kick off with a Visionary tribute to Hawaii legends Eddie Aikau and Nainoa Thompson for their outstanding contributions to the water safety, navigation and Hawaiian history. Friday includes a Pathfinder Award tribute to Actress Kirsten Dunst for her “eclectic choices” in film. Saturday follows with the NOVA award ceremony to actress Jessica Chastain, coming off a successful 2012 garnering many nominations and accolades.
