[PUBLIC HEARING] The immense build-out of South Maui continues. Two weeks ago, the County Council Land Use Committee began thrashing around Wailea 670 and its 1,400 proposed homes. Now the committee’s Aug. 15 agenda wasn’t released by press time, but it’s likely they will start looking at the Makena Resort expansion, which will include 1,100 new luxury units. The Wailea 670 Environmental Impact Statement dated to 1988, but Makena’s is ancient by comparison—the sucker was written back in 1974, when Nixon was still in office! Making matters a little more interesting, super-developer Everett Dowling is now one of Makena Resort’s owners, and he usually gets his way. Should be a good meeting, but to be safe call 270-7838 to confirm Makena’s on the agenda. The Council Chambers are located on the 8th floor of the Kalana O Maui Building, 200 S. High St. in Wailuku.
