“Fly away to be free/On wings of uncertainty,” sings Makana, but there’s nothing uncertain about his music—it flows effortlessly, his slack key guitar smooth and unencumbered. Makana’s voice is sweet and deep, setting off the warm tones of the guitar nicely. The song “Neckstop Blues” is like a beach at midnight in the middle of summer. The lyrics cry out: “Sweet recycled dreams/ Baby they’re just blowing steam.” For fun insights into this creative mind, read Makana’s blog at blogs.myspace.com/makanaworld. His recipe for a “Life Smoothie” is delicious, and I plan to mix up an extra-large one myself as soon as I find a blender that can handle “2 teaspoons of curiosity”—which I know is quite crunchy, and probably won’t mix well if my blender won’t even slice up a frozen strawberry. Check out Makana’s musical blend, dubbed contemporary world rock—a chunky rainbow smoothie loaded with rock, jazz, funk, ethnic and bluegrass—this weekend. 242-2787 or www.mauiarts.org
