New Zealand is home to a plethora of awesome. The Maori, for one. Epic landscapes, for another. And you can’t forget The Lord of the Rings, The Flight of the Conchords and, of course, Maisey Rika, a young singer/songwriter hailing from Whakatane, New Zealand. If you haven’t yet heard Maisey Rika croon her heartfelt songs, just imagine Sade’s heartbreakingly honest and raw rasp intertwined with the rich culture and te reo (language) of the Maori. Rika says her culture, whaanau (family), friends, people and music are the most important things in her life. And you can really feel that in her music. She’s been kicking butt and taking names since she was 15, when her first album, E Hine, went double platinum and she was nominated for “Best Female Vocalist” at the New Zealand Music Awards. Rika will perform alongside her brother and Hawaii’s own Renaissance man (and multiple award winner) George Kahumoku Jr. Definitely a show not to be missed, and if you do miss it, your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body.
