KORY KUKAHIKO – Come celebrate Lahaina with a night of live Hawaiian music under the stars and handmade Polynesian crafts. Lahaina local Kory Kukahiko will play some classic Hawaiian tunes on Front Street as part of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s Hawaiian Music Series. Kukahiko’s love of Hawaiian music began at an early age after his father introduced him to it. There will be limited seating, so you should probably take blankets, mats and/or low beach chairs. Free. ART=MIXX – Here’s a chance to interact with light, sound and color in ways you’ve never done before. ArT=MiXX is a multimedia event that will bring together DJs and visual artists for a night of sensory overload. Step inside the Colorbox–a cube created by Gabe Mott that contains four projectors, a doorway, and an Xbox–to create visual art by controlling kaleidoscopic projections of color with your body. Other visual artists presenting their work will include Trevor Arnholt (event producer), the Maui Makers, Doug Deboer and Randy Mills. Ariana Hornkohl’s Azuray Swimwear line will be featured on live models in a collaborative performance with the Colorbox. DJ Cudra Clover will be playing “abstract sounds” and as the artist performances wrap-up, head for the dance floor as DJ Deviant spins. WAILUKU FIRST FRIDAY – What do smooth jazz saxophonists and Venetian-style burlesque dancers have in common? You can find both of them at the next Wailuku First Friday Town Party. Nationally acclaimed jazz musician Jeff Kashiwa will bring his tunes to the Maui Thing stage. Also check out a Hawaiian steel guitar performance by Joel Katz, Latin and Brazilian beats from Dr. Nat and his band Rio Ritmo and Ryan Glavor, Connor Snow & Jon Toda. Impressive teen band Visibly Shaken will also play at Giannotto’s Pizza. Be sure to pick up a free cupcake at Wailuku Coffee Company at 6:30 in celebration of their 2nd birthday, then join Maui OnStage for their Venetian Ball at the Iao Theater, which features burlesque dancers, food and dancing from 8:30pm-1am. Tickets are $20 at the box office. Other town party highlights include a display of works by Wailuku artist Phil Sabado at Rinko Maui and a beer garden by Na Leo Kalo’o that benefits the Hawaiian Immersion program Kula Kaiapuni.

MAUI HULIAU FILM FEST – “Huliau” is a Hawaiian word that refers to a turning point or time of change. The Maui Huliau Foundation came about to address Maui’s need for a turning point when it comes to environmental issues. The MHF educates tomorrow’s leaders, Maui kids ages 12-18, on the environment and filmmaking. At their annual film festival, the MHF will showcase six short films created by Maui youth from eight different schools on the island. RECALLING HAWAII – History comes to life this Saturday at Recalling Hawaii, a multimedia re-telling of Hawaiian history through hula, mele and oli. Directed by Roselle Keli’ihonipua Bailey, Recalling Hawaii began in 2010 and has been performed in Germany and Switzerland as well as here in the islands. The cast is comprised of musicians, dancers, actors and chanters of all ages. Na Hoku Hanohano Award winners Na Kaholukula will be featured in this performance. The event is a fundraiser for Maui groups Lae’ula ‘O Kai, Ka Ipu Kukui and Ka ‘Imi Na’auao ‘O Hawaii Nei Institute. $25/adult, $15/keiki 12 and under ($30/adult, $20/keiki day of show). ULUPALAKUA INSPIRATION – With its green rolling hills and purple jacaranda trees in bloom, it’s no wonder that Ulupalakua’s beautiful vistas inspire so many artists. At Ulupalakua Inspires, you can enjoy this natural beauty as well as live music, local artist exhibits, a free wine tasting and a delicious lunch from the Ulupalakua Ranch Store & Grill. The entertainment lineup includes jazz musician Jeff Kashiwa, the Mitch Kepa Band, Hawaiian steel guitarist Joel Katz, Fulton Tashombe and Kelly Covington and the Baldwin High School Jazz Band. Check out Maui artist Tim Garcia as he sculpts nine-foot tree trunks that comprised the “Hula Circle”–a ring of ancient cypress trees recently toppled by winds. BASKETBALL MAUI SUMMER CAMP – Here’s a chance for boys and girls (age 7-18) all over the island to learn basketball skills from actual NBA players. It’s made possible by the nonprofit Basketball Maui, in conjunction with NBC Camps. There aren’t many opportunities like this in life for kids, so if they can take part, get them in! BLUE LAGOON OPEN MIC NIGHT – Have you ever sipped the cotton candy cocktail at Blue Lagoon in Lahaina? EAT PIZZA FOR BREAST CANCER – Marie DeJournette has spent much of the last five years climbing mountains in an effort to raise money to fight breast cancer. While there’s great symbolism in this action, there’s also great results: so far, she’s brought in $60,000. This July, she hopes to climb throughout the Tibetan plateau. But before then, she’ll host a benefit evening at Flatbread, which will donate a portion of all pizza sales that night to breast cancer research. TOM CONWAY – True story: When current MauiTime Editor Anthony Pignataro flew back to Maui nearly a year ago, Eh Brah cartoonist Ron Pitts picked him up at the airport, took him first to Costco for a few necessities and then home to drop off his stuff before finally taking him to Stella Blues in Kihei to hear Tom Conway sing and play the guitar. Thanks to Conway’s musical skills, Pignataro was back in the island frame of mind in no time at all. Conway may be from Michigan, but his easy-listening jazz guitar is all Maui. Free. 4-6pm.
