[SPORTS] Did you all know that Maui is considered the birthplace of kiteboarding? Oh Maui, the mother of so many natural wonders, how we love thee. Our trade winds and warm water make the North Shore one of the best places to kiteboard in the world, which is why Red Bull King of the Air competition will take place Oct. 9-16 at Ho’okipa Beach. This contest is blowing in the sport’s big guns from Tahiti, France, Mexico, Czech Republic and more, to contend for the $21,000 prize. Ah, the international language of MONEY! And with our gusts, and their gusto, it should be huge! Apparently they’ll be pulling all kinds of moves, known to the well-versed kiteboarders as kite loops, handle passes, board off’s and huge grabs, at heights of 40 to 60 feet. Most of my kite experiences took place as a kid and usually involved a tree, scissors and frustration. I’m very keen on seeing how these kings of air manage to control and harness wind to their own advantage. This competition marks the seventh and final year of the event, one last chance to see elite athletes take on our natural elements of wind and water. It will be a long day of sport and Red Bull will be there when you need it to give you that holy second wind. [MOLLY RETTIG]
