ANNE GLOVER’S STRING FIGURES – For Youth and Teen Read Week, the Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) is hosting Canadian storyteller Anne Glover. You can catch her this Thursday for a morning storytelling session at the Makawao Public Library. Glover tells stories with string figures, and has gone on to become a hit show at schools, libraries and theaters across the country. Her use of Sign Language, English, French and intricate string figures have left many intrigued. Join her for classic folktale and humorous storytelling. Free. 10am. MOLOKAI FESTIVALS OF ALOHA – Enjoy the Aloha Spirit during Molokai’s Festivals of Aloha this Thursday through Saturday. The festivities will honor one of Molokai’s beloved aunties, the late Moana Dudoit. From the crowning of the royal court to the pa’u riders, the three-day festival is a beautiful cultural exhibit. On Thursday, start the festivities with the royal court inauguration, then tempt your taste buds in the Poke Contest. Honor the keiki on Friday with a few youth contests and the Kalo-Ulu-‘Uala Contest (traditional Hawaiian food). Saturday brings bed races, the traditional horse pa’u parade, live music and cultural displays. KEB’ MO’ – Musician Keb’ Mo’ (born Kevin Moore) is bringing his acoustic blues-folk fusion to the Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s stage this Friday. The multiple Grammy winner has diversified his musical ability as a composer for many television shows, label songwriter and performer. He’s known for hit releases like “Just Like You” and “The Reflection,” and draws inspiration from various blues eras and genres, catch the acoustic performance of this modern blues bird. $35-$65. 7:30pm. LAHAINA PLANTATION DAYS – Lahaina Restoration Foundation’s annual celebration Plantation Days returns this Thursday and Friday, for its fifth year. The two-day festival commemorates Lahaina’s roots in Hawaii’s plantation past. Shop the farmers market, grab lunch from local food vendors and learn about Westside history through the cultural exhibits. Or just enjoy the entertainment line-up: Da Braddahs, Ekola and Hoku Zuttermeister will all be there. There will also be a keiki zone complete with horse rides. $3/ Keiki under 5 Free. 5pm-10:30pm. SURF & TURF CAMP – Keiki 8-16 who have Type 1 Diabetes are invited to the American Board for Child Diabetics’ Surf & Turf Camp this Saturday. The day camp will ensure a safe opportunity for kids to participate in surfing and stand-up paddling activities they may not otherwise be able to do. Parents, caregivers and families will also have time for support and networking. Volleyball, snacks, water and lunch will also be provided to participants. CLIP FOR THE CURE – The American Cancer Society and Mastercuts at the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center are teaming up to bring you “Clip For The Cure” this Saturday. The ACS estimates that this year 295,000 women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Joining thousands of salons and stylists across the country, Mastercuts will donate 10 percent of the proceeds from each haircut to the Regis Foundation for Breast Cancer research. ‘HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA’ – This Saturday you can get in the spirit of Halloween at the MACC’s Starry Night Cinema presentation of Hotel Transylvania. The animated film takes viewers onto the grounds of Dracula’s Hotel Transylvania, where monsters and their family go to play. Dracula (Adam Sandler) has invited all his best friends to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis’ (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday. But everything changes when an ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel. MONSTER BALL – This Saturday after dark, Gannon’s in Wailea transforms into the official Monster Ball and Captain Morgan joins in on the fun. Geared towards helping cancer survivors regain health, Mana’olana continues to build on its mission statement to reach all cancer survivors. HAUNTED HAIKU HIKE – Too old to go trick-or-treating? Tired of the haunted house scene? This weekend Haunted Haiku Hike returns as a creative alternative to the old Halloween standbys. For a keiki-friendly experience, the hike opens between 12pm-3pm and kids can enjoy a mythical creature petting zoo, secret caves and a mystery maze. Between 5pm-8pm, the real ghosts come out during the adult (appropriate) festivities. Leave the kids at home for a night of creepy crawlers and extra scares. This trail may thrill or chill, so be on your guard. Proceeds benefit the The Sanctuary Birth and Wellness Center. All children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
