[HAWAIIAN MUSIC] I don’t really know how to put this, but Henry Kapono is kind of a big deal. He’s one of those guys who you’d want to call “Mister” upon meeting in person, and I usually don’t even feel comfortable calling my bosses mister. He commands that kind of respect because of the length and quality of his music career and the deep love he has for Hawai’i, which is reflected in every one of his 21 solo and collaborative albums. Also noteworthy is the name of his first band (Pakalolo), the fact that he once received an athletic scholarship to UH Manoa, and that he’s been around for a minute. As a young man he entertained the troops in Vietnam, and he even appeared on Magnum, P.I. and Regis, way back when Kathy Lee was still around. His latest release, Wild Hawaiian, is his first all-Hawaiian release and is the number-one seller at Borders stores statewide, proving that Kapono (which means “righteous” in Hawaiian) is no moldy oldie. My personal favorite Henry Kapono story is the time he awoke me at yet another boring Jack Johnson concert by singing the most stunning version of Kenny Loggins’ “Danny’s Song” I’ve ever heard. Thank you, Mister Kapono. Stay classy. Tickets: $10, $25, $30, keiki get half-price. [COREY NIELSEN]
