The second annual Henry Kaleialoha Allen Hawaiian Steel Guitar Festival is taking Hawaiian music appreciation to a whole new level. The free workshops (where you can learn to play steel guitar and even make one), lectures and performances will surely draw beginning to seasoned players from all over the island and beyond. The festival will also be peppered with chants by Kahu Danny Akaka, Jr. and Kahu Aloha Kekoolanit, and a welcome address by Lieutenant Governor James “Duke” Aiona. On Saturday, musical performances continue at the Kanahele Room, Tiki Courtyard and Tiki Terrace Restaurant. That night, there will also be dancing under the stars with music by Bill Noble and Tropical Swing. The only ticketed event is the reception on Thursday, which costs $150 per person and includes food, champagne, a gift bag and photos. For more info or reservations for the reception, call 669-6189 or visit henrykallen.com [Sierra Brown]
