[CHRISTIAN ROCK] Christian rock has come a long way since the days of Stryper and Creed (greatest T-shirt ever: “Even Jesus Hates Creed”). These days, bands seem to understand the advantage “not sucking” can have on their ability to deliver their message to a broad audience. Exhibit A is Olivia, whose “Butterflies” is currently a Top 20 song on the Christian rock charts. Members Reed, Justin, Gabe and Christian hail from Oahu and San Diego, and have recently played shows on Kauai and Oahu to adoring fans. Don’t believe me? Check the comments on their MySpace page (www.myspace.com/oliviatheband). They’re beloved for their high-energy, inspirational live shows that are neither overtly preachy nor compulsively devoted to the sacred themes of secular music: money, ho’s and parties. Olivia’s independently produced CD’s and merchandise will be available at the show. One shirt that won’t be for sale—or necessary—“Even Jesus Hates Olivia.” I’ll bet he loves them. [COREY NIELSEN]
