Have An Ice Day
Saturday & Sunday (November 13 & 14), 11am-1pm, Lahaina Cannery Mall, Free
Few mediums are as ephemeral and unforgiving as ice; sculptors of the frozen substance subject themselves to certain heartbreak (the key word, unfortunately, being break). The challenge of ice sculpting in cold weather is tough enough, but take that competition to the tropics and it’s like trying to create a sidewalk chalk mural in a monsoon or oil painting underwater. But if Hawaii’s only annual ice sculpting extravaganza is to be held anywhere, Maui’s only fully enclosed, air-conditioned shopping center seems like the best bet. Thus, Lahaina Cannery Mall will again host the International Ice Sculpting Exhibition and Competition, drawing artists from across the state and as far away as Japan. Wielding saws, picks, drills and chisels, sculptors will showcase their skills on Saturday during a freestyle exhibition, and on Sunday will engage in a timed contest for cash and prizes—transforming 300-pound blocks of ice into delicate masterpieces. Since one of the pleasures of such temporary art is witnessing its creation, you’re welcome to ogle all you like. 661-5304, lahainacannery.com
