When brilliant filmmaker Taylor Steele (Castles in the Sky; Stranger Than Fiction) and senior editor of Surfing Magazine Nathan Myers team to host a surf video contest — even in the most antipodal alternate universe — neither the resulting film nor it’s process is piddly. Through five rigorous rounds (four seasonal, from winter through fall, plus a wild card), thousands of surfers and filmmakers submitted two-to-three minute segments, vying for audience approval enough to earn them a spot in the film Innersection: Blue. Twenty-five winners were chosen by popular vote, and two of them — Clay Marzo and Matt Meola (with “filmers” Adam Klevin and Elliot Leboe, respectively) — are Maui’s own. Even after they’d won, the 25 winners again took to the waves and reels, and some “surprised [us] with 100percent new footage,” says Meyer; with he and Steele wielding it all into 100 minutes of movie magic. “We’re writing you from deep in the edit cave now,” Meyers says in a Oct 26 innersection.tv post. “Midnight oil. Hammer and a blowtorch. We’re getting medieval on this thing. Found our intro music at 4 a.m. last night and started dancing. You should see these all new sections.” Now complete, 30 simultaneous “Black Friday” world-premiers are slated across the globe — and FirstLight’s got one of ’em, with Marzo and Meola appositely serving as hosts. The boys will be signing autographs and doling out tons of giveaways (including an SOS surfboard) — but the biggest prize remains, potentially, for one of them: $100,000 (yep, that’s six zeros and no decimal points after that “1”). Distributed by WAX (formerly VAS Entertainment), the DVD of Innersection will hit surf shops on Nov 27, each packaged with a unique card/code that will allow the holder a single vote for who they think has the best section. (Guess what happens to the folks with the most votes?) So let’s do that math again: two masterminds behind production, five rigorous rounds of competition, twenty-five winners, thirty simultaneous world-premiers, and $100,000 on the line. Whew. That equals, like, infinity awesome. 808-242-7469 / 808-579-9244; mauiarts.org / mauifilmfestival.com
