Friday (June 4), Iao Theater, Wailuku First Friday, 7pm, Free
If your closet is anything like mine, it’s more alter to nostalgia than receptacle for anything wearable today. But if you wait long enough, most things come back around. (Well, some things… I could do without stirrup pants, thanks.) Recent resurfacing of ’80s styling may have you itching to bust out your Baja hoodies, Locals Only and paint-splattered duds; and now may be high time to make all your waiting worthwhile. But in the fast-paced world of fashion, it’s a fine line between fierce and faux pas. Trends could be shifting to the ’90s as we speak! You might leave the house in all your day-glo glory, only to find out that it’s half-past Hammer Time and babydoll dresses are again all the rage! Then some grunge kid beats you up for wearing a jumpsuit… Play it safe by rockin’ it Regan where others will be doing the same. At this month’s First Friday in Wailuku, the Iao Theater kicks off their all-‘80s summer theme with a free screening ofFast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Michael Pulliam hosts, with apanel discussion preceding the film. Since it’s hip to be square, there’ll be an‘80s trivia contest with Na Koa Ikaika and Flatbread Co. sponsoring prizes. But don’t start buggin’ if your recollection is hazy. Consolation prize: all-you-can-eat popcorn. 808-242-6969, mauionstage.com
(Sponsored in part by the County of Maui, the Hawaii Tourism Authority, Na Koa Ikaika Maui Pro Baseball and Flatbread Pizza.)
My recommendation is to use the First Friday festivities as a prep for the theater’s “Ultimate ’80s Dance Party,” (Friday, June 18)—where your resurrected duds could really pay off during the costume contest. Not to mention, you’ll have the upper hand during the, again, ’80s trivia contest–plus, a Pepsi Challenge. (If this is somehow has become a carbonated chugalug contest, don’t bother entering–I’m winning… UPDATE: It’s not. It’s the Pepsi vs. Coke blind taste test. Of course. But if anyone hears about a soda chugging contest, I’m there. I know, gross) The cover song concert will be brought to you live by the likes of The Cheryl Rae Band, but the moves are all up to you. (Sliding scale donations $5-$20. Visit mauionstage.com for more. Or, call 808-242-6969.)
UPDATE: Marty Dread has been added to the bill! Also, here’s the scoop on where da prizes: ELISE CLOTHING CERTS / GREEN TI MASSAGE CERTS / FLATBREAD CO. CERTS/ NA KOA IKA IAKA MAUI PRO BASEBALL TIX / THE WEDDING SINGER @IAO THEATER TIX
Here’s a recent comment from mauitime.com, re: the Battle of the Bands Wrap, which had me laughing…

I wasn’t there either. I was home watching Miami Vice and playing on my Commodore 64. I did not get the 80’s theme thing either. I mean, don’t we always dress like the 80’s since it IS the 80’s? Gotta go, Friday Night Videos is coming on in a few hours. Love that Kajagoogoo!
