‘HOLLYWOOD ARMS’ – Making it’s Hawaii debut, Maui OnStage is bringing you Carrie Hamilton and Carol Burnett’s Hollywood Arms. Originally written by Hamilton, the project was completed by her mother (Burnett) after Hamilton’s passing. Now Michael Pulliam, who also moonlights as a Maui News drama columnist, is directing the Maui production. Follow Nanny, Louise and Helen as they battle personal struggle while living on welfare in a one-bedroom apartment. Nanny’s no-nonsense mentality, Louise’s battle with alcoholism and Helen’s dreams of escaping poverty makes for a dramatic yet humorous take on what once was Burnett’s reality. $17-$28. 7:30pm Fridays and Saturdays/ 3pm Sundays. JOSHUA NELSON & THE KOSHER GOSPEL SINGERS – Joshua Nelson discovered Mahalia Jackson’s album in his grandparents basement and thus begin a love affair with her music. Years later on a college trip to Israel, Nelson (who is Jewish) observed how Jews often integrated their principles and practices into the cultural contexts in which they lived. After applying the same methodology to music, he gave birth to kosher-gospel. The African American singer-songwriter would go on to wow audiences with his powerful vocal abilities. BROTHERS CAZIMERO – The Brothers Cazimero have been recording for more than three decades. The duo–Robert Cazimero on bass and Roland Cazimero on 12-string guitar–has won 25 Na Hoku Hanohano awards. They’ve also been Lei Day staples at the MACC year after year. In 2006, the Grammy nominees were inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame. With hits like “My Sweet Pikake Lei” and “Home in the Islands,” the duo will continue hold a place in Hawaiian music for many decades to come. $12-$37. 7:30pm. THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT – The Butterfly Effect is a downwinder women’s water sport event. Starting from Baldwin Beach, competitors will stand-up paddle, kayak or canoe to Kanaha Beach. Participants must have previous downwinder paddle/sail experience of one mile and register online to participate. Lululemon Athletica will kick off the non-competitive route with a yoga warm-up. The public is also invited to take part in the community beach cleanup (9am), enjoy music, guest speakers and a beach party celebrating the finish line (noon). 4 THE LUV OF ARTS & MUSIC – Here’s a chance to dedicate an evening to the arts. It’s the 4th annual 4 the Luv of Arts, which honors the late surfer and artist Gianna Mitchell. ULTRAVIOLETS – The Ultraviolets are holding a Black Light Special. As a benefit for their West Coast tour, the Ultraviolets will take over Ambrosia. LEI DAY – In Hawaii, May Day is Lei Day. To celebrate, the Fairmont Kea Lani will host lei making lessons (1:30pm) and hula classes (3pm).
