MauiFEST Hawai’i continues to honor the memory of Uncle Boy Kana‘e with the 7th Annual Hana Film Festival. Eighteen films will be showcased (see Da Kine Calendar for complete listings), including Chief, which returns to Maui after screening at the Sundance and AFI Film Festivals, Wa’a Ho’olaule’a, a winner of seven prominent awards, the world premier of Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike, as well as Maui-made flick Kekohi, an adventure set in the time of Kamehameha the Great. The event also features many of Hawaii’s finest entertainers, such as Grammy winner John Keawe of the Big Island, along with his wife Hope, who will lend a little hula helpin’, as well as Walter Keale, and Donald Kaulia—both Grammy nominees who performed at President Obama’s inauguration. Maybe it’s Pavlovian conditioning thanks to Tutu’s, but there’s something about Hana Bay that makes me hungry. No worries, plene ono grinds will be made available, along with local-style craft booths. Need something to get you in the mood as you plan your haul to Hana? Hit up the MACC’s McCoy Studio Theater (mauiarts.org) on Sunday, November 1 for the Hawaiian Heritage Film Festival’s free screening of Biography Hawai’i: Joseph Nawahi, and discover the fascinating story of Nawahi—a renaissance man and true patriot of our islands. 573-5530, mauifest.net
