Every year 250,000 Christmas trees are cut down from the Pacific Northwest, placed in air-conditioned containers, placed on freight ships and brought to Hawaii. The process is not particularly sustainable, eco-friendly or economically efficient.
Imagine the quantity of fossil fuels burned to cut trees, deliver them to containers, air condition and finally ship from the mainland!
Maui’s The Permaculture Group is providing Maui residents (for the 3rd year) with an alternative to expensive and eco-unfriendly mainland pine trees. These native trees provide a great alternative to the mainland pines. Instead of filling our landfills with dead trees which have a carbon footprint the size of a Hummer SUV, buy a native tree and plant it in your yard when Christmas is over. Moreover, by planting your living tree in your yard you’ll be helping to sustain and support Maui’s endemic plant life.
