[LECTURE] For reasons that aren’t well known, state officials have collected water quality data on just 61 percent of Maui’s rivers, streams and aquifers. Though clearly insufficient, the available information is striking: 97 percent of those water sources are “impaired,” meaning it’s not healthy to use them for drinking purposes, recreation, etc. This information comes from the state Department of Health’s recent DRAFT 2006 Integrated Report of Assessed Waters in Hawaii. The official comment period on this report runs until Jan. 19. To help residents understand it and, if necessary, tell Honolulu what they think of this, the Pacific Whale Foundation and Maui Tomorrow are sponsoring this free talk. Water quality expert and Kihei resident Robin Knox will be on hand to go through some of the report’s more arcane features, as well as help anyone who wants to write an official letter of comment. The talk is free. For more information, call 249-8811. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
