By George (and Dennis)!
Heralded as Hawaii’s Renaissance man, George Kahumoku, Jr. is not simply a master slack key guitarist and multiple Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano award-winner—he’s a visual artist, entrepreneur, farmer and teacher (both at Lahainaluna and UH Maui College; plus his summertime Maui Slack Key Guitar & Ukulele Workshop, now 13 years running). Kahumoku’s pal Dennis Kamakahi (who, in 1974, succeeded legend Gabby Pahinui in the group Sons of Hawaii) also has a shiny bevy of awards on his mantel, and is considered one of Hawaiian music’s most prolific composers, with over 500 songs—many of them local classics—under his belt. The opportunity to see either perform live is a treat, so the chance to see them both is not to be missed. This Friday, Da Ukulele Boyz will open for the prestigious pair at Stella Blue’s popular Supper Club. [$30 show-only / $60 includes four-course meal, 874-3779, stellablues.com] Can’t get enough Kahumoku? Uncle George also has a late night show this Saturday at Casanova, starting at 9pm. [$15, 572-0220, casanovamaui.com] Plus, catch George Kahumoku Jr.’s Masters of Hawaiian Music Slack Key Show every Wednesday at the Napili Kai Beach Resort’s Aloha Pavilion. If the show’s name sounds familiar, it should. It’s the concert series that birthed the Grammy award-winning Masters of Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar volumes; and Kahumoku will continue to team with Kamakahi, starting August 25 and running through September 22.
