According to comedian Gabriel Iglesias, there are six levels of fatness. From lightest to heaviest they are: big, healthy, husky, fluffy, DAMN! and OH HELL NO! Is this a step toward size acceptance, or a form of sizeism? See, this is why no one ever invites me a comedy show—instead of giggling as Iglesias relates how a little dancing makes him sweat, I’m wondering if he’s making a statement about how American culture does not cater to the needs of larger people. When Iglesias tells his audience that hearing his girlfriend coo “chocolate cake” over the phone works like phone sex, I wonder if he’s aggressively mocking himself to soften the mocking of others, or if he’s just trying to get a laugh. I don’t know. But people with a sense of humor tell me that Iglesias is funny, and I believe them. So check him out, as his Too Hot, Too Fluffy tour hits the Valley Isle. www.mauiarts.org
