[FOOD] When it comes to food festivals I’ve got lots of experience, so I’m going to share with you my four simple rules for success. First, be prepared. If the festivities begin at 5 p.m., like they do for the 16th Annual Taste of Lahaina and Best of Island Music Festival, eat a small breakfast but skip lunch so you’re hungry enough to sample the food of over 20 restaurants, vendors and caterers. Second, mix it up. Try alternating between eating something rich and delicious, like Lahaina Fish Company’s seafood chowder, with something light and fresh like Alexander’s tropical Mahimahi salad with mango salsa. But don’t forget to munch on the braised short ribs from Lahaina Coolers or the Asian barbequed shrimp from Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar. Third, pace yourself. If you start to feel full, grab a bag of Maui Kazowie Kettlecorn, relax on the grass and enjoy the music of Grammy and Hawaiian music award winning entertainers, including the Barefoot Natives, Richard Ho‘opi‘i and Mana‘o Company. This allows you to follow the fourth and most important rule of the food festival: save room for dessert. There will be coffee cake tiramisu and waffle cone sundaes from Hawaiian Village Coffee, ice cream blends from Real Fruit Ice Cream and Maui pineapple upside down cake from the Tiki Terrace. Keep these simple guidelines in mind and you’ll enjoy all the goodness that this food and music festival has to offer. Admission: $5. www.visitlahaina.com for more info. [JESSICA ARMSTRONG]
