THURSDAY, MAY 3
THE OCEAN AS ART – Here’s how you can suck up more than salty inspiration from artist Dino Miranda with his latest works “Fire in the Sky” and “Just After the Storm.” His liquid muse, our deep blue Pacific, is highlighted in acrylics on canvas and lithograph. Ekolu Kalama kicks off this artsy event with live music at 9pm while DJ Blast will slam dirty beats on his new night at 10pm. Free. 9pm. South Shore Tiki Lounge (1913 S. Kihei Rd.); 808-874-6444
PAY IT FORWARD – This Thursday you can pay it forward with a digital vote for local hero and flower farmer Robert (Bobalou) Benavides and Maui-born artist Hallelujah Duncan. National Mobility Awareness month is celebrated this May with a giveaway of three Wheelchair Accessible Vehicles to a caregiver, veteran or person with a disability that is dealing with or overcoming mobility challenges. Their nine-year old daughter Ruth is the only Hawaii entry! She is diagnosed with developmental delay, and going mobile can make all the difference in the family dynamic and her growth. All you have to do is vote online! It’s the easiest pay it forward gesture you’ll be asked to do all month. Go to facebook.com/RuthsRide to get the link or just vote here: nmeda.com/mobility-awareness-month/heroes/hawaii/kula/573/ruth-robert-benavides
FRIDAY, MAY 4
FIRST FRIDAY – Wailuku is quiet most days of the week, so it makes sense that it gets to host Maui’s first town street party of the month. And it’s really taking off this week with the Air Force Band on the Maui Thing Stage at 6pm. There will be plenty of artisans and performers lining the street, and you can gear up for Cinco de Mayo at Wailuku Banyan Tree, where Bilongo, Maui’s Gene Argel will fire up the salsa and Latin sounds with his new band. Body Alive Yoga kicks off the evening festivities with “Exhale” community yoga at 4:45pm. Of course, if you just want to be a voyeur, Kamaaina Loan has a live web cam to watch from the comfort of your laptop: wailukucam.com. Free. 6pm. Market St. and surrounding areas (Wailuku)
JUST SCRAP XVI – For you MMA fans out there, this is the real deal. Chad “The Brahma Bull” Thomas will take on Lolohea Mahe while Adam Akau (from Maui!) will go against UFC Veteran Scott Junk. This is as good as it gets (until, presumably, Just Scrap XVII, but we’re just saying). Anyway, all seating is first-come, first-served, so get there early. $20 general, $30 cageside. Doors open 6pm, Scrap starts at 7pm. War Memorial Gym (700 Halia Nakoa St., Wailuku); BJPenn.com/tickets
SATURDAY, MAY 5
KA‘NAIO CLEAN-UP – The land past Ulupalakua is gorgeous and sparsely populated. It’s rugged and remote, but needs a good cleaning. Now the Ka‘naio Community Association and Community Work Day is calling for volunteers to go out there and get the job done. They’ve got the tools necessary to finally get the abandoned cars, tires and appliances out of the watershed, but they need people because of the area’s size. But when the clean-up is done around 2pm, Bully’s Burgers will provide music and a great barbecue. Free. 10am. Triple L Ranch Corral (Ka‘naio); 808-280-7070 or 808-878-3272
ONION FEST – Maui’s triumphant reign over the best damn onion in the world is celebrated at the 23rd Annual Maui Onion Festival in Ka‘anapali this Saturday, May 5. Of course, we began celebrating our revered sweet white globe way before agri-tourism turned into big business. Now the festival, in its 23rd year, boasts an elite chef competition for best onion recipe, a Ka‘anapali chef cook-off, a keiki and adult onion eating contest and food booths. You can bet the most ono onion rings will be there, too. There’s also live music by the Air Force Band of the Pacific, Benoit JazzWorks and the Barefoot Minded. Festivities begin with an early-morning Polynesian Hula Dance at 10am. Kaanapali bartenders will also compete at the Cinco de Mayo Mix Drink Contest at 2:30pm. Free. 10am. Whalers Village (Ka‘anapali)
SUNDAY, MAY 6
ART FROM MAUI’S KEIKI – Here’s your chance to see works of art created by students across Maui, from kindergarten through the 8th grade in both public and private schools. It’s an annual exhibit, which this year is called “Visual Storytelling.” The art is, as always, colorful, exciting, surprising and inspiring. Show runs through May 20. Free. Daily, 11am-5pm. Schaefer International Gallery at the MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org
DON BARNHART’S HYPNOTIC COMEDY – Funny guy Don Barnhart is back on Maui to get audiences rolling with his hypnosis comedy show. Barnhart zeroes in on talents hidden in the audiences’ subconscious mind. Skeptics are always welcome, no joke: “There are no gimmicks, no pills and no magic tools,” says Barnhart of his technique. Barnhart even has his own iPhone app. He wants to help you unclog your subconscious mind, but also get a few laughs (he also offers a one-hour hypnosis seminar on Sat., May 5 at 1pm). The family-friendly show starts at 8pm for all ages. But if you like your hypnosis comedy R rated, come at 10 for the adults-only show. Barnhart won’t say exactly what happens there, but you get the mental picture, right? $15 advance, $20 at the door. 8pm family-friendly show; 10pm adults-only show. Stella Blues (Azeka Mauka Center, 1279 S. Kihei Rd.); powerupcomedy.com; donbarnhart.com
MONDAY, MAY 7
CELEBRATE LAHAINA GRILL’S BIRTHDAY – It’s time for kama’aina to treat themselves to an exquisite evening of food. The incomparable Lahaina Grill is offering 50 percent off all entrees on the menu every Monday in May. The restaurant is celebrating 22 years of impeccable service, magnificent food and wondrous pairings and they want to share it with you. In fact, we think there might just be a Kona Coffee Mountain Meadows roasted rack of lamb with your name on it. Just call to make reservations first (valid Hawaii ID required). Every Monday in May. 6pm-close. Lahaina Grill (127 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina); 808-667-5117; lahainagrill.com
FREE MARKET, TROPICAL PLANTATION-STYLE – Everyone needs a pet coconut. That’s according to Mauka, an artist and writer who sells his colorfully painted coconuts at the Maui Tropical Plantation Maui Market on Mondays. This open air market has artisan Maui items, some local veggie stands, local coconut candy, tiki carving, carved wood art, jewelry and tropical island wear. It’s like a swap meet, but on a smaller scale (though the lawn is huge!). Who knows how big this could get. Their Maui Cattle Co. hand-patted cheeseburger with the works–sold for a mere $4–was worth the trip alone, but they also offer Vietnamese crepes that are off the hook. Don’t let the mild manner of this open market fool you. Free. 9am. Maui Tropical Plantation (1670 Honoapiilani Hwy, Wailuku); 808-244-7643
TUESDAY, MAY 8
ROSPOND AND MOSLEY – Don’t over-think your Tuesday afternoon plans. Just keep it simple and drive to Ma’alaea for an incredibly serene harbor view and settle in for the Randall Rospond sunset set from 5pm to 8pm at Beach Bums Bar and Grill. Rospond is welcoming guitarist Tim Mosley, and I’m guessing a jam session will ensue. Grab a couple of Maui Brewing Co pints of beer, get some of their great barbecue, and your Tuesday will slip away to hump day in no time. Free. 5pm. Beach Bums, (300 Ma’alaea Rd.); 808-243-2286
KIPAHULU COMMUNITY MEETING – When most tourists, and even residents, hear the name Kipahulu, they probably think of Charles Lindbergh’s grave and the Pipiwai hiking trail that leads to the 400-foot Waimoku falls. But the Kipahulu District of the Haleakala National Park is a massive area, encompassing “both the easily-accessed coastal section and the highly restricted, biologically precious and pristine upper slope reserve that is closed to all but limited research access,” according to the National Park Service. Now here’s a chance for you to learn more about the park, from actual park staff. Free. 5-6:30pm. Kalena Triangle (Kipahulu). 808-248-7375
WEDNESDAY, MAY 9
HOOK IT UP ON SINGLE’S NIGHT – Yeah baby! Now while we’re are not suggesting that you’ll find the love of your life here, we are not so subtly reminding you that you live on an island. One of the most remote islands on Earth, in fact. And if you haven’t been partying in the Lower Main area of Wailuku, Watercress Sports Bar and Grill is where you should be if you’re between relationships. There you can mix it up with lots of entertainment and events, including their Wednesday Singles Night. Loosen up with their DJ music and drink specials and go where your beer goggles take you. But please remember to post everything to Facebook–some of us like to see. No cover. 10pm. Watercress Sports Bar and Grill (270 Waiehu Beach Rd., Wailuku); 808-243-9351
LONGHI’S GETS THE BLUES – Blues rock sensation Popa Chubby will launch his three-island Hawaii tour with three shows on Maui beginning with Longhi’s Wednesday, Charley’s Thursday and Iao Theatre in Wailuku on Friday. His blues guitar licks are mind-blowing, and he says his affinity for the blues all began with a jukebox in a candy store back in the Bronx in the 1970s. Straight from New York, he brings his livin’ large style of blues to Maui with 22 album releases under his belt and sell-out concerts all over the world. $25. Doors: 9pm; show 9:30pm. Longhi’s (888 Front St., Lahaina); 808-667-2288.
