PUKANA SHOWCASE – The community is invited to the University of Hawaii Maui College’s Institute of Hawaiian Music for the UHMC Chorus showcase Pukana. The second annual concert will serve as the program completion and release of the group’s compilation CD. Prior to the evening, students enrolled in IHM’s program are taught the music process through instruction, mentorships and practice. The mentor emphasis focuses on better preparing aspiring musicians for success in Hawaiian music while emphasizing language and history. Come enjoy the fruits of their labor as they sing and play instruments of Hawaii. A meet and greet will follow the show. $12. 6:30pm. AWESOME FREE PAULA FUGA SHOW – A host of seasoned Stella Blues performers will grace the stage this Friday thanks to the folks at the OLUKAI HOOLAULEA. Paula Fuga, Mike Love and Sam Ites will serenade the establishment, Hawaiian style in this once in a lifetime Free show. Mike Love has recently been nominated for two Na Hoku Hanohano awards while Fuga and Ites continue to create lasting, gorgeous music of their own. LAHAINA SECOND FRIDAY – Lahaina Second Friday is back for another evening of community and conversation. Following the traditional opening by Ulalena, Lahaina Town Action committee invites residents and visitors alike to stroll historic Front Street. FAGBUG DOCUMENTARY – To raise awareness about bullying and hate crimes against the LGBTQ community, the documentary Fagbug makes its premiere this Friday. It chronicles Erin Davies’ journey across the U.S. and Canada in her VW bug, recording the positive and negative reactions the she encountered. Now you can meet the lady behind the movement after the screening. Prior to the show, the Fagbug itself will be parked in front of the Maui Sunseeker resort in Kihei May 10-14 for photo-ops. SPRING DANCE CONCERT – Kihei Charter High School’s Dance Company is presenting their fourth annual Dance Exhibition this Friday and Saturday. Featuring live musicians, dancing and singing, the dance company includes Kihei Charter middle and high school students. MAUI CRAFT SESSION – As a precursor to American Craft Beer Week, Maui Craft Session invites everyone to celebrate craft beer, whisky and cigars. Highlighting the production, ingredients and methods of craft, the evening pairs Maui Brewing Co. beer, Southern Wine & Spirits and General Cigar. MAUI MATSURI – The Japanese Cultural Society of Maui is holding its 13th annual Maui Matsuri. The family-friendly festival attracts thousands from the community and is filled with cultural demonstrations, entertainment and film. Friday, May 10 (6:30pm-9pm) will consist of the movies Life on Four Strings and Light Up Nippon, which will play at the UH Maui College-Pilina Building Student Lounge. Saturday, May 11 (2pm-9pm) will offer an afternoon of food booths, a saimin eating contest, costume cosplay, traditional martial arts and more. The Kodomo “child” Corner will be filled with origami and fish printing crafts. The evening will include a community Obon dance (7:30pm), and attendees are encouraged to dress in traditional attire. DISH CRAWL – Dishcrawl lands on Maui for the first annual Dishcrawl Lahaina. The event takes food lovers on an adventure, dining their way through the historic town. Participants will sample dishes reflective of the island setting. The excitement lies in the fact that participants are given only slight hints of restaurant locations. If you have diet restrictions, be sure to check with event organizers regarding participation. Beverages are not included and will be served at discretion of the participating restaurants. VISITOR INDUSTRY CHARITY WALK – The Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association invites you to walk for Hawaii non-profit charities in the 2013 Visitor Industry Charity Walk. Participants will start at War Memorial Soccer Field, walk 3.1 miles through Keopuolani down Ka’ahumanu Avenue and end up back at the starting point. DEJA VU 7 – Deja Vu Maui returns for an evening lineup reminiscent of the ’70s and ’80s dance era. Maui bands The Shamroks, Purple Haze and Asian Blend and others serve as the inspiration for this event’s theme. Performing will be The Merzy Beats, The Sakuras, City and County and a finale by the Shamroks. A DJ will play dancing music from a variety of eras. FREE BASKETBALL CLINIC – Summer is just around the corner and Basketball Maui is offering a free basketball clinic this Saturday. Lawrence Wright will guide participants in the fundamentals of basketball while fostering a positive learning environment.
