Pool school
Thursday (July 16), 7pm, Tavares Community Center, Makawao.
Have you ever been to a poolside event at sunset that wasnÕt cool? Even if the multipurpose room of the Tavares Community Center at the Pukalani Pool isnÕt the swanky venue you might be imagining, itÕs free and sponsored by friends in high places (literally)! Thanks to the Friends of the Haleakala National Park (fhnp.org), Maui biologist Dr. Art Medeiros will present his ÒEndangerment of the KumulipoÓ lecture next week at 7pm. Dive in with MedeirosÕ review of the formation of the Hawaiian archipelago, Òyielding the (planetÕs) highest endemism,Ó and a discussion on land use history and current restoration efforts of HaleakalaÕs southern slopes. Plus, learn a little about the NPÕs new NuÕu DistrictÑa 4,100-acre acquisition of an ahupuaÔa extending from the crater rim to a half-mile of Kaupo shoreline. IÕll admit, as a Kula kid whoÕs frolicked and fished out there since Òsmall kid times,Ó the topic does touch a tender spot of sentimentality in meÑbut the new opportunities for biological and cultural preservation are important to all. So, though this party will feature no DJ and require no dapper duds, the event still deserves a packed house. [Anu Yagi]
