Lady Gaga can keep glue-gunning Kermits, but everyone knows Sir Elton John did it first. In fact, no one’s done more for the business of bombastic applique and sequined spectacles than the iconic, ivory-tickling pop star. In addition to donning fabulous duds and cranking out an endless array of timeless tunes, John’s been open about his battles with substance abuse and now provides counsel to addict celebrities (he’s partly responsible for pal Eminem’s recovery). He did cause a bit of a kerfuffle earlier this month when he told Rolling Stone about Billy Joel’s closet alcoholism—after Joel waxed poetic about John, writing in the mag’s 100 Greatest Artists of All Time issue, “Elton kicks my ass on piano… His spontaneous, improvisational playing always challenges me. The piano is a percussion instrument, like a drum. You don’t strum a piano. You beat the shit out of a piano. Elton knows exactly how to do that.” But surely the two old friends will patch things up; after all, they were both doing this thing before Gaga was babbling baby talk.
