There’s a dirty underbelly to the foodie revolution, and it boils down to the waistline. Even with all the great farm-to-table eats, the move to slow food from fast food isn’t necessarily tipping the scale in the right direction. Finding balance calls for moderation and exercise but in our culture of burning the candle at both ends, there seems to be little time and even less knowledge about caring for your mind, body and spirit.
Thankfully, the Ritz Carlton Kapalua has created a week of wellness events called E Malama Kou Kino, which translates as “care for your body.” The event calls on Beth Shaw, the YogaFit queen, and her team of experts to create a diverse set of workouts and workshops to prepare a foundation of wellness.
The event centers around morning workouts like Taiji, yoga, pilates and guided trail walks in the morning with different instructors. Then the instructors teach workshops on getting better sleep, debunking ab exercise and how to find long-lasting health and happiness. The event targets not just the fitness of your body but the health of your mind. Workouts like labyrinth meditation walks and nutrition tips about how to eat chocolate and drink wine without worrying about your waist will be key.
The team starts with Beth Shaw, the innovator behind the trendy YogaFit ,YogaSweat and YogaButt brands of fitness. And Robert Ferguson, the face behind the Diet Free Life series, has a Wine, Chocolate and Wellness workshop that will be coveted (advance reservations are recommended).
Taiji Fit is exercise rooted in Tai chi, and instructor David Dorian Ross says it can be life-changing. Nick Tumminello knows strength training and developed his own hybrid of conditioning. Then it’s all about yoga and ayurveda, the Indian system of holistic medicine, and Felicia Tomasko will lead workshops in breathing, relaxing and deep sleep.
The event is also peppered with walks from Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ambassadors of the Environment program led by the Ritz’s naturalists ($49 per guest). Claudia Micco will also teach a pilates-inspired class. Micco is the resident trainer at the Ritz and teaches classes there as well.
The Waihua Spa is hosting a Friday night event featuring healthy pupus, skinny bar, mini treatments and a trunk show. All attendees will get a gift bag and can enter the raffle (tickets are $55). A skinny cocktail Happy Hour from 5:30-7:30pm at Alaloa Lounge ends each day.
All classes and workshops are open to the public, and the Ritz is offering day packages for $45 (cost for Maui residents with Hawaii ID is $35 to access all the workouts and workshops). There’s no all-access pass, but if you want to attend all days they will offer a discount. The day-passes do not include the spa event or the Cousteau explorations.
