[PARTY/FUNDRAISER] Oh, the masks! The beads! The music! The oh-so-Brazilian rump shaking! Traditionally, Carnaval is an event celebrating the beginning of Lent—that time when Catholics say adios to bodily pleasures. So, in essence, Carnaval is a celebration of those pleasures (you know, before giving them up), as well as a celebration of self-expression, empowerment and all things that glitter. Here on Maui, we’ll be helping to celebrate this cultural phenomenon with a Carnaval of our own. There’ll be a live performance by Maui’s own Samba band, Banda Dende, as well as Brazilian dancers and a Carnaval parade. This event is to benefit the Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) in continuing with its training and programs for children and adults. Tickets: $25 in advance, $35 at door, includes free mask and beads. 21 and over, with no-host food and drinks. There is also an elite pre-Carnaval party in MAPA’s Steppingstone Playhouse at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $75, which include admission to the main Carnaval party. Tickets available at customer service kiosk or online at mauiacademy.org or by calling 244-8760. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]
