INTERNMENT: STORIES FROM MAUI EXHIBIT – Fri. Dec 29 – Fri. Feb 23. On February 19, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9066 authorizing the internment of Japanese Americans, German Americans, and Italian Americans to camps in the United States. Immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, U.S. military personnel began rounding up Japanese residents in Hawaii whom they perceived as being influential in the community. Approximately 110,000 people of Japanese ancestry were interned. The exhibit will feature personal stories, photographs and information on the two locations on Maui which served as detention centers. ‘ONE PUKA PUKA: THE PURPLE HEART BATTALION’ EXHIBIT – Until – Wed. Feb 28. 2017 marks the 75th anniversary of the formation of the 100th Infantry Battalion, comprised almost entirely of Nisei from Hawaii. The original exhibit consists of five panels, and covers the overall story of the Nisei experience in WWII.
