FAMILY CAREGIVERS CONFERENCE – This Thursday you can learn better ways to care for our kupuna at the County of Maui’s 12th Annual Family Caregivers Conference. The conference will feature two guest speakers, Dr. Laura Mosqueda and Dr. Robert Romasco. Topics covered include types of dementia, commonly used medications, health care and more. The fee includes exhibits, workshops, door prizes, continental breakfast and lunch, as well as conference materials and activities. Scholarships are available from the Maui County Office on Aging and from Alu Like for Native Hawaiians. BOZ SCAGGS – Boz Scaggs is an American guitarist, singer and songwriter who hit big in the 1960s as a member of the Steve Miller Band. Scaggs eventually earned spots in Top 20 hit lists with multi-platinum albums like Silk Degrees. No stranger to Maui, Scaggs is returning to the island as part of his Memphis Tour. “Dinah Flo,” “You Make It So Hard” and “Slow Dancer” are just a few of Scaggs classics that have traveled with him through the decades. MAKAWAO THIRD FRIDAY – The third Friday of the month has arrived and that means Makawao is throwing a party! A quaint town tucked on Haleakala’s slopes, Makawao is known for its paniolo charm. ODD FUTURE – And now we have Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (OFWGKTA) this Saturday at the MACC. This is a hip-hop collective that includes Tyler-The Creator, Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt, Hodgy, Mike G, Taco Bennett, Left Brain, Domo Genesis and the young woman DJ and Syd the Kyd. Odd Future originally released their mix tape and followed up with a 2012 sequel, The OF Tape, Vol.2. The group’s makeup consists of smaller groups that each contribute as rappers, singer-songwriters and producers. MAKAWAO HISTORY PROJECT GRAND OPENING – Calling all Makawao residents past, present and future to the Makawao History Project Grand Opening. The future home of a permanent Makawao Museum, the Makawao History Project will be on display starting this Friday and will run through Tuesday, Dec. 31. The public is invited to view historic photos, collectables and other memorables of the charming town. The grand opening will take place during the Third Friday Town Party and will feature a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, The Five Corners Band with Rosalind Modica, Sanders and Kalaway and the Kalama Intermediate School Ukulele Band. INSIDE AMPERSAND – Maui Academy of Performing Arts’ contemporary dance talent is presenting the contemporary dance company Inside Ampersand for one weekend only, this Friday through Sunday. Formed in 2012, the company is directed by MAPA’s Executive & Artistic Director David C. Johnston and Artistic Director Rebecca Owen. They use and promote Maui’s local talent, and has added another layer of depth to MAPA’s already existing theater program. LAHAINA ARTS SOCIETY’S 46TH BIRTHDAY – Lahaina Arts Society is turning 46 and you’re invited! LAS welcomes all for two days of festivity this Saturday and Sunday. Lahaina Arts Society has played an integral part in the Banyan Tree art scene and the Lahaina Arts Association. The two-day celebration will include live entertainment by Benny Uyetake, Maui Jams and more. Keiki can participate in art-in-action projects and everyone is invited to contribute to the community mural and get on your feet during line-dancing lessons. YMCA YARD SALE – It is often recited that one man’s trash could very well be another man’s treasure and The Maui Family YMCA is inviting you to find out! This Saturday from 7am to noon, the YMCA will be hosting a mega yard sale with proceeds to benefit YMCA Camp Keanae. There will be a range of product including children’s items, clothing, books, electronics, sporting goods, furniture, home and garden and much more. SLIGHTLY STOOPID & BARRINGTON LEVY – The Danny Way Foundation is presenting Slightly Stoopid and special guest Barrington Levy at the MACC this Sunday. Coming off their 2012 Unity Tour and seventh album, Slightly Stoopid is known for their Reggae rhythms, punk-rock and dub fusion. Joining them will be dancehall vocalist and Reggae artist Barrington Levy. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will benefit The Danny Way Foundation, which works with local communities to build state-of-the-art skateparks in Hawaii. $35-$70. 5pm Door/ 6pm Show. PAIA PIE CONTEST – The third annual Paia Pie and Scarecrow Contest returns this Sunday to the La‘a Kea Farm. The contest takes place during the La‘a Kea Harvest Festival. It’s fun for the entire family, and will include tractor rides, music, pony rides, crafts, pie samples and a vote for your favorite scarecrow. The popular pie vote winner will earn a stay at Lumeria Maui Retreat and the popular scarecrow vote winner will get a $250 gift certificate to Spago. KAIN NA! KOKUA – Help the Philippines by going to this benefit event, Kain Na!, that takes place this Sunday. Given the devastating earthquake that struck in October, and the super-typhoon that hit last week, they really need it. Here, local chefs will create a culinary experience for guests, complete with a halo-halo bar. The family style banquet will feature music by DJ Ron, chef action stations and a silent auction. Featured chefs include Joey Macadangdang (Roy’s), Gevin Utrillo (Hyatt Ka’anapali), Isaac Bancaco (Ka’ana Kitchen, Andaz Maui), James Simpliciano (Simplifresh), Jake Belmonte (Maui Culinary Academy), Jojo Vasquez (The Plantation House), Larry Badua (Badua’s Catering), Riko Bartolome (Slow Food Maui) and Sheldon Simeon (Mala Wailea). DISCOVERING THE CLASSICS WITH PAPA LOPAKA – Join Papa Lopaka (otherwise known as Robert DeVinck) as he returns to the Kihei Public Library for another animated reading of his Classics Illustrated. This time he will read from a comic book adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. Later the English scholar will conduct a question-and-answer session. ‘THE KING AND I’ – Based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon, The King and I follows Anna, a British schoolteacher hired as part of the king’s drive to modernize his country. The relationship between the king and Anna is marked by conflict through much of the movie, as well as by a love that neither can admit. The 1956 film would garner actor Yul Brynner many awards.
