It should be law that every keiki have cherished, “small kid time” memories of regular pilgrimages to the library. My own reflections on toddlerdom are happily crowded with little more. See, Mom and I took our excursions seriously. Before brandishing our embossed green cards (remember the old ones?), we’d sit under the shade of a tree, peel back the Saran off of a two-pack of manapua, and fuel-up before getting our fill of heady bibliomania. We’d exhaust operating hours and always left with a stack of books bigger than I was. One of my favorites was a ruddy orange-colored gem called “Concoctions.” In it were recipes for shea butter lip balm in foil tubes and how to polish chrome with peanut butter. What you’re bound to learn—and the memories you’ll make—are boundless at our public libraries. All the more enticing this summer, is that the Hawai’i State Public Library System enjoys no furloughs during the months of June and July, and—amidst a slew of incentives (as if need them)—offers these upcoming performances in their 2010 Children’s Summer Reading Program: Peter and Melinda Wing in “Pirates Ahoy!” Thursday (June 24), 10am, Makawao, as well as Storyteller-Balladeer James McCarthy, Friday (June 25), 10:30am, Kihei & 2pm, Wailuku, and Tuesday (June 29), 11am, Hana. librarieshawaii.org, Makawao: 808-573-8785, Kihei: 808-875-6833, Wailuku: 243-5766, Hana: 808-248-4848
