BEAUTIFUL, TRAGIC KALAUPAPA
The Music Ministry Program of the historic Keawala’i Congregational Church presents a benefit concert featuring their adult choir, Na leo Nahenahe. Accompanied by organist Danny Brown and pianist Ellen Caringer, the group will present works that are to be recorded on their second CD release, due out next year. Ka ‘Ohana O Kalaupapa “is an organization dedicated to the permanent memorial which will list the names of the thousands of people stricken with Hansen’s Disease… who were removed from their families to [Kalaupapa] on the island of Moloka’i. It is estimated that 8,000 individuals died in exile on the peninsula. Most of them have no gravestone or any other form of remembrance of their lives.”
Sure to be a culturally rich evening of moving music, the event is tonight, September 25th at 7:00 p.m.

Further, as Catherine Cluett of the Moloka’i Dispatch reported this morning on Hawai’i Public Radio, Reverend Damien de Vuester’s (“Father Damien”) canonization takes place October 11th at the Vatican, with Moloka’i residents including Audrey Tagochi–cured of her cancer after praying to Father Damien (soon to be Saint Damien), her recovery deemed one of the two miracles needed to name him a saint–are journeying to the Vatican City to partake.
I’ll also alert readers to “fellow journo,” Chris Hamilton’s cool new story “On the Trail of a Saint,” in Maui No Ka Oi Magazine. Additionally very cool: Guy Junker–-who illustrates regularly for the aforementioned mag and provided the above image for the story (featuring the animated Hamilton at top)–is responsible for many Maui Time Weekly illustrations, most notably the LC dude and beloved Eh Brah guy!
