[FOOD] Yessir, the Maui Fire Department will be hosting their second annual “Who’s got the heat” chili cook-off fundraiser at this year’s Maui County Fair. Chili, my friends, is a topic I do not take lightly. It is my belief that chili fanaticism—much like religion—is instilled in us by our parents at a very early and impressionable age. My own undergraduate experience with chili occurred in early childhood with the introduction of my mother’s recipe to the family table. Being completely objective, it is simply the greatest chili ever created by humankind. Seriously. I’m not arguing, It’s a fact. Anyway, I’ve spent my entire life seeking a chili to rival Mom’s. Nothing’s come close. I’m starting to grow hair on my feet. But a chili cookoff? There may be some competition here, others like Mom. Then my eyes light up. Not only can the public taste the competitors’ chili, (for a $1 per bowl donation to benefit the Shriners Children’s Hospital’s transportation burn unit) it can also JOIN THE COMPETITION! So, finally, my mother will get her due. Justice will be served, and the universe will swell with emotional gratitude for what it never knew it was missing. For details, call 270-7561.
