If you’ve ever had the opportunity to become close friends with a band geek, with out actually becoming one yourself, you understand that they are, deep down, extremely cool people. I know one who proudly hangs five guitars, alto and tenor saxophones, penny whistle, flute, electric keyboard, harmonica, and another instrument that I don’t even know what to call, on his wall. On a regular basis (every third day) he asks me to move out so that he can use my space to build a sound-proof music room with egg-carton walls.
The fundamental difference between the species of band geek and poser-rocker is that the band geeks’ coolness factor starts off right above the kid with the green mole in 6th grade and rises exponentially with age as he logs one professional and academic achievement after another. Meanwhile, the poser-rocker peaks at 17 when he plays at his high-school prom, and will be found ten years later eating spaghetti-o’s out of a can and getting a few unfortunately stuck in his gelled hair in a basement somewhere. The band geek that I speak of remembers the militaristic coaching of his conductor and band teacher at Kalama Intermediate school. It will suffice to say that his band teacher is the only adult who has every truly been able to reign in this particular young man, probably because succeeding in band was (and is) so important to him.
It’s an amazing thing that there are young kids who already know how to find happiness and success in life.
