Let’s see how uptight we can be: University of Hawaii, Maui College, is pleased to present “A Day of Culture and Art: A Celebration of Maui’s Multiculutural Community.” Maui’s diverse mix of ethnicities will engage in performances and demonstrations to express their unique cultural practices.
So, basically, a bunch of MCC kids are going to hang out on the lawn, probably by the giant, kind of ridiculous, stone statue, and dance around in lots of different ways, to the tune of fun, upbeat music, played by young people. Groups from all over the island are going to get a half-hour or so in the spotlight throughout the day. MAPA Dance, Hawaiian Serenaders, Maui Taiko, Sarala Dance, Hawaii Ballroom Dance, Makawao Hongwanji Kendo, and Good Shephard Filipino Dance Group will liven up this sleepy sunday. Jamallad and The Global Citizens, a local reggae, folk rock, afro-pop band, is also going to play a few songs, hitting the stage at 2PM. Their lead singer, Jamallad, is nominated for the NaHoku award in five catagories, and their guitar player, Prem Brosio, has been touring hippie circles from Maui to Switzerland for years… definitely worth checking out. The day will wrap up with a drama presentation, “Transitions,” from 4-5 PM. Entries from Maui County Sister Cities Foundation and MOA of Hawaii art contests will be displayed, and winners announced. Also, the Masaru “Pundy” Yokouchi Award will be given to a person who contributes to culture and arts in Maui County. So, school on a sunday? Why not? Stop by anytime from 10 am to 5 pm on Sunday, April 11th, for a fun day out on the lawn with young musicians, dancers, performers, and artists. Current updates and more information will be posted continuously at the Arts Education for Children website: www.aecg.org or call Marilynn Hirashima at (808) 878-1866.
