For those who can’t get enough of photographer Peter Lik‘s stunning photographs of nature in Hawaii, there’s a luxurious new book of his imagery available.
Here’s how Lik’s website describes the book, which is titled HAWAII:
After visiting this exotic South Pacific for the first time decades ago, Peter realized he had found exactly what he’d been searchin[g] for–a paradise of lush forestry, clandestine waterfalls, fiery volcanoes, and crystal clear surf. Those initial moments set him on a passionate course of capturing the beauty of the islands year after year. Thousands of shots later, the Artist reveals his latest collection, highlighting a landscape that continues to evolve with every cascading stream of lava and every whispering breeze. Within this portfolio of over 160 newly revealed images, viewers will discover why this stunning archipelago is a true gift of the gods.
The presentation of the 272-page book is extraordinary. There are many dozens of Lik’s famous panoramic photos of various places around Hawaii throughout, organized more or less randomly and without any caption or accompanying text (though notes at the end of the book identify each photo’s location).
It’s meant to be thumbed through leisurely–a shot of water exploding on the shoreline leads to a two-page spread of majestic sea cliffs, which leads to a time-lapse shot of a verdant jungle waterfall and so forth. The whole thing is also rather heavy–mostly because the cover is made of 9mm blackboard, and it comes with a magnetic-sealed slipcase.
Of course, all this comes at hefty price: $95. What’s more, the book is limited to 250 copies.
Lik has been photographing panoramic images of nature for more than three decades. He operates 15 galleries around the world, including one on Front Street in Lahaina. In our 2014 Best of Maui issue, readers gave Lik the Best Gallery award. For more information, go to Lik.com.
