Friday (Sept. 2), 10pm, Casanova, Makawao, $5/free with costume
Put on your ‘F**k Me Pumps’ for a Tribute to Amy Winehouse Dance & Costume Party. Unless you’ve been living under a rock (like I oft do, and explain in this week’s Kula Kid), you’ll know that Winehouse passed away on July 23, sparking about as much controversy in death as she did in life. Whether you’re in ‘Moody’s mood for love’–or if you think ‘love is a losing game’ and are into ‘just friends’ instead–head to Casanova’s where DJ Boomshot will be mixin’ and mashin’ Winehouse hits, celebrating the eclectic contralto that hallmarked this fallen star. Oh, and did you know that John Waters once praised Winehouse by saying “it’s hard to look cheap and pull it off”? Or, did you know that if you come in costume, the show’s $5 cover ain’t just cheap–it’s free? Well, ‘now you know.’ Oh, and here’s another tip for dressing up: Winehouse once told Harper’s Bazaar that “I just dress like … I’m an old black man. Sorry! Like I’m an old Jewish black man. I just dress like it’s still the ‘50s.” So, there you go!
