Thank goodness the rapture didn’t happen last Saturday—this week’s events just wouldn’t be the same. See, if Harold Camping had his way, I’d be at the 42nd annual Barrio Fiesta this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (May 27-29), gnawing kawayan (bamboo) poles into weapons and fighting off demons to the bitter end. (With apologies to tinikling dancers.) Because nothing—I repeat nothing—can keep me away from tasty, tasty, cascaron. (And I’d share, of course!) In fact, I reckon that if we all ate enough Filipino desserts, the apocalypse would upend itself, because Filipino food truly is Heaven on Earth. Sure, the Barrio Festival—the biggest and best celebration of Filipino cultural heritage on Maui—is about much more than desserts (like the crowning of the Miss Bario Fiesta queen and the awesome tradition of debating in verse, known as bukanekgan), but priorities are priorities. [8am-3pm; War Memorial Complex, Kaahumanu Ave. Kahului]
