[MUSIC] The reggae band 4-Word—as in “to move forward”—is currently recording a new album on Maui and, in the words of lead vocalist Ras Gabriel, will be “utilizing the good music scene” on the island in two performances. 4-word is a six-piece reggae band with members hailing from the mainland West Coast and Hawai’i. The well-mixed band from Colorado, Oregon, Kauai and the Big Island, has been playing together for about 13 years. Despite their decidedly American upbringing, the members of 4-Word uphold the true traditions and message of reggae, performing original music with the occasional Bob Marley and Dennis Brown covers. Picking up on various influences, they make use of guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, harmonizing vocals, and percussion instruments including the Myahbingi drum—the spiritual drum of Rastafarianism—to make their unique sound. They are also cohesively intent on relaying a message of universal empathy and “the world working as one people.” In addition to this weekend’s show at Hapa’s, 4-Word will back on Aug. 12 at Casanova before they wrap up their album and go back on tour in the U.S. [GABRIELLE POCCIA]
