So you want us to wear some stretch pants, lay on a rubber mat and twist our right elbow around our back so that we can grab our left knee, all while focusing on doing that “wind-through-the-trees” breathing and trying to decipher what the hell Eka Pada Rajakapotasana is and why exactly we would want to do a One-Legged King Pigeon Pose anyway?
There are actually many more merits to a regular yoga practice than the ability to translate Sanskrit. Thanks to Deborah DiPierro of Island Spirit Yoga Studio in Lahaina, we can figure out what some of those benefits are:
Be More Bendy: DiPierro says, “Yoga helps to improve mobility and flexibility, increasing range of movement and reducing aches and pains.”
Look Less Like Nick Nolte: “Yoga reduces the physical effects of stress on the body.”
Keep Your Cool: “Yoga helps to lower blood pressure and heart rate.”
Don’t Be Illin’: “Yoga helps to boost the immune system.”
Just Say O2!: “Yoga teaches people to take deeper, slower breaths, which helps lung function and triggers the body’s relaxation response.” Yeah… But we think it’s gotta be good for sex, too.
Go with the Flow: “Yoga helps to improve circulation and moves oxygenated blood to the body’s cells.”
Get Rid of the Kinks: “Yoga helps to improve body alignment, helping to relieve back, neck, joint and muscle problems.”
That Guy Over There in Monkey Pose Has a Nice Butt: “Yoga helps us to focus on the present moment and helps create mind/body awareness.”
Peace, Love and… : “A yoga practice can change your life in many ways. It helps us to open up our hearts and become more compassionate and understanding of others.”
Alright, alright. Somebody hand me my Pranayama cushion.
