Pulehu BBQ Shack (Pork Sandwich)
It’s a good thing they’re cheap, ‘cause these pork sandwiches are downright addictive. For less than $3, you get a soft-as-Wonder-Bread bun and slow-roasted, succulent, pulled pork with a sweet and tangy barbeque sauce. We like to add a dollop of coleslaw, too, but really, they’re perfect on their own. Even on your budget, you can load up on them like they were White Castle burgers. And sides—like potato salad, corn and baked beans—are just a buck more. 1500 Lower Main St., Wailuku, 244-4049.
$2.95
South Shore Tiki Lounge (Sausage Sandwich)
There are so many to choose from: Bratwurst, Kielbasa, Portuguese, Hot Italian, Andouille, Chicken Mango-Habanero—I mean, the list goes on and on. You see, the Tiki Lounge was once the home of the Sausage Shack and has wisely decided to keep that sausagephilia alive and well. All of Tiki Lounge’s hand-made, very lean gourmet sausage sandwiches on toasted hoagies are well under $10. And at that price, you can afford to do a side, too, like BBQ beans, fries, salad or a corn dog. What? C’mon, a corn dog can be a side! 1913 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 874-6444.

Charley’s Restaurant (The Famous Woofer)
Willie Nelson’s patronage is not the only thing famous about the Charley P. Woofer Restaurant & Saloon. It is also home to the Famous Woofer—a half-pound burger made from fresh, grilled, Maui-bred beef. It comes on a monstrous sesame bun with the requisite LTO (lettuce, tomato and onion), as well as your choice of French fries or coleslaw. You can also get cheese or substitute your bun for the whole-wheat option for another buck. Although if you’re already ordering a half-pound of beef, I don’t know why you’d bother with a whole-wheat bun. Unless of course you’re ordering a Diet Coke, too. 142 Hana Hwy., Paia, 579-9453.

Big Wave Cafe (Prime Rib Sandwich)
Now this is a nice place. Just a little cafe with great food and service. Some of the more elaborate entrees are going to set you back some bucks, but not the Prime Rib Sandwich. You see, it’s Prime Rib, but it’s in sandwich form! How could you go wrong? 1215 S. Kihei Rd., Kihei, 891-8688.
$9.25
Caffe Ciao (Volcano Veggie Sandwich)
It’s quite simple, really: Between two slices of olive kalamata bread are layers of roasted eggplant, yellow squash, zucchini, lettuce, tomato, red onion and olive relish. Mmmm… olive relish. Anyway, it’s a hell of a sandwich. And it’s good for you. AND you can eat it one of Wailea’s big resorts. Located in the Fairmont Kea Lani Resort, 4100 Wailea Alanui, Wailea, 875-4100.
$9.50
Cool Cat Cafe (Luna)
Sometimes, you just have to have a burger for dinner. This one’s got bacon, jack cheese, avocado, Thousand Island dressing and the rest of the usual accoutrements. Anything less would be unsuitable for the evening dining hour. Located in the Lahaina Wharf Center, 667-0908.
$8.99
Ale House (Chicken Club Wrap)
The Kahului Ale House is a male air-conditioned haven of TV screens large and small, pool tables, video games, basketball, food, liquor and nightly entertainment. The only thing missing are those computer trivia games you can play at your table. There are plenty of items on the menu for less than $10, but I’m convinced the best are the wraps. You can get a chicken club, veggie or pork wrap and they come with fries or coleslaw. The wraps come stuffed with fresh greens, juicy tomatoes and dressings and they hit the spot. They’re also low on carbs—that is, if you order them without the fries. 355 E. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului, 877-9001.
$9.95
Ba-Le (Sandwich)
The French took over Vietnam in the late 1800s and held it for nearly a century. They were forced out of the country in 1954, but an unusual reminder of their nasty imperialistic ways lives on in fabulous French Vietnamese cuisine. For example, Ba-Le’s sandwiches, which bring fine French bakery rolls and croissants together with tasty Vietnamese pickled daikon and carrots, cilantro, sliced cucumber and onion on top of your choice of protein. Vietnamese favorites like lemongrass chicken, tofu and char siu sit side by side with French standards like roast beef, pate and ham. 260 Dairy Rd, Kahului, 877-2400; Lahaina Cannery Mall, 661-5566.
