The general consensus is that I am a negative person.
For example, a normal person sees a mosquito bite. I see dengue fever. A person coughs. I’m pretty sure it’s lung cancer. At the very least, emphysema. Bleeding gums? Oral cancer.
I’m playing cards and flop a boat, the other guy’s bound to river his straight flush. I fold.
Fender Bender? My spleen could be ruptured and I wouldn’t even know it. Call 911!
I wish I was joking, but this is the sad truth. The good news is that I decided this year to learn to manifest some positive energy into my life. Being a negative head-case is giving me wrinkles and you know, wrinkles suck. Wrinkles mean old, and old means dying, and dying sucks.
So I ask around.
“How would one go about manifesting positive energy into their life?” I ask.
“Dude. Weed,” wheezes my stoner friend.
“I’ll show you some positive energy,” says my husband.
“You’re not getting all hippie on me again, are you?” asks my best friend.
“Uhng, baaaaa,” says the baby.
“Dammit, Mom, you just need a new life,” says my five-year-old daughter.
I concur.
The problem is that I’m on my third “new life” in 10 years and they tend to get more complicated every time I start over. Time to call in the professionals.
I pack up the baby and head over to the New Waves Wellness Center in Makawao. I’ve been there in the past and have a great deal of respect for co-owner Terri Holter DCSW, LCSW. You catch that—the fancy stuff after her name? Yeah, it means she’s educated and actually knows what she’s talking about. Very important. Plus it means she can take insurance, also very important.
Holter practices energy medicine—including Thought Field Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, Rapidly Integrating Transformation Technique, Healing from the Body Level Up and much, much more. To top it off, she’s served as a mental health professional since 1986. According to my mom, a mental health professional is exactly what I need. Perfect.
So the baby and I sit down and I give Terri the lowdown on the need for positive energy. I add in that the baby is also a negative jerk and could use a little dose of goodness himself. She gives me the smile-slash-grimace of a woman who has seen and heard it all.
She does some muscle testing (a fascinating practice that looks like magic, but is actually scientifically backed—so cool!) and we discover that my polarity is totally flipped. Which means that I have a negative charge when it comes to certain affirmations. Not a major shock there.
This particular affirmation is, “I make decisions with ease.” I have a major block when it comes to decision-making. Terri helps me perform a temporal tap—which is basically applying quick, gentle bursts of pressure to the head while repeating the affirmation. I repeat the process about five times before the muscle testing comes back that my polarity had flipped and that I now have a positive charge.
The temporal tap affects how the brain processes information—the goal being to get the affirmation into your head before your subconscious can call you a liar.
Terri also works on me using the “Healing from the Body Level Up” technique, which consists of more muscle testing. It’s really interesting to find that I have these trigger/blocks that are causing negative and destructive patterns within myself.
You know how most people associate fear, pain, loneliness, etc. with a negative experience? Yeah, well my problems are happiness, love, commitment and any “strong emotion.” If you’ve read all of my journals since the age of 12, you’d probably get that, but there’s no way that anyone (not even close friends) could have pulled those out of the air.
So we work on those with a combination of essential oils, sprays and more tapping. According to Terri, it’s going to take more sessions to weed through everything—there’s a lot of stuff going on—years of negativity and all.
Another thing that we do is this cool thing called HeartMath. Dr. Phil featured a product by this company on his show recently. Anyway, you put your finger into this thingamabob and it tracks and records your heart rhythms on the computer. Terri watches the screen and tells me that I have good heart rate variability, which is a huge indicator of vitality. I’m feeling more positive already.
By reading the screen, she can also tell when my heart goes into its most resonant frequency. When your heart goes into this frequency, it has an energy field that is stronger than that of the brain and any other organ. In fact, in this frequency, the heart has a force field that can be measured from 12 feet away.
It’s a healing rhythm and the other body systems, as well as anyone in your little field, will pick up and benefit from it. Cool, huh? With regular use, you’re supposed to be able to train your nervous system to get your heart into this state.
I leave New Waves Wellness Center feeling relaxed, renewed and hopeful that I might be able to chill and let the goodness flow my way now that my polarities are fixed and my heart is doing its thing. Dare I say I feel positive? Yeah, I think I’m feeling positive.
It kind of freaks me out.
