Hi. Just wondering [about] this article on Salvador Dali (“My Affair
with Salvador Dali,” Jan. 11, 2007), why you guys didn’t think it was
necessary, besides of course mentioning he was a great artist, maybe
also mentioning the political context, especially his excellent
connections to the Franco regime… If it’s not a leader, a fuhrer, a
king or Franco, who cares. Maybe you also could have mentioned who were
his great connections to the Franco regime… But I guess political
context outside of Maui isn’t relevant to you guys there. Thank you.
Goodbye.
THAT’S SHOWBIZ
I don’t know you but I do read your article every week. I am
disappointed in this week’s article (Holoholo Girl, Jan. 18, 2007). I
know the girls on the [Maui Fever] show and I think they are getting
enough shit about it that you don’t need to print a hurtful piece
because you may have had nothing else to write about.
These girls are nice and fun to hang out with. Even they are not
completely satisfied with the way they are being portrayed. Just keep
in mind almost any 20 something living on this island would love to get
their fifteen minutes. MTV chose the cast at an open casting call and
it was their choice to cast all white kids. I’m just saying they are
people too and when you project negativity and hate that is what will
come back too you. How about next week you hit a more pleasant topic.
No hard feelings.
SUPER LETTER
Thank you so much for your great article on the Superferry fiasco in
today’s Maui Time (“Sea Trial,” Jan. 18, 2007). I am especially glad
you included the information about Superferry’s Terry O’Halloran and
Terry White sitting on the [Humpback Whale Sanctuary Advisory Council];
I have found it absolutely maddening that this conflict of interest has
not been been brought to the public’s attention in most articles.
Even today if you go to the Sanctuary’s website there is no mention
of O’Halloran’s employment or connection to Superferry in his bio. He
is still listed as Tourism Business Solutions, LLC. I spoke with both
O’Halloran and was never given a straight answer.
I also found it ironic in Ed Tanji’s [Maui News] article about
protest at the Maui Sanctuary the other day that the Superferry issue
was not mentioned. It is entirely unethical for the Sanctuary to have
come up with this whale avoidance policy while two representitives of
Superferry sit on Council seats. Please keep up the good work in
bringing these facts to the public’s attention!
