I had a lot of fun appreciating archetypes with this week’s column, and was surprised by how easy it is to read meaning into the cards and their positions. Here are the notes from my tarot card reading at the Psychedelic Emporium with Suzy Q — and if you’re a regular reader, or know me personally, you might have fun reading into-it what you will, too. [Sci-fi music swells…]
If you’d like to try it out for yourself, you can see Suzy at her Paia shop at 42 Baldwin Ave. (upstairs from Cafe Des Amis) or under the banyan tree at Wailuku First Fridays.

IN REGARDS TO YOUR QUESTION- Six of Cups
“Cups have to do with relationships and love. It’s a water suit and is also called the nostalgia card. It represents a wish for the way things used to be. Whatever it was your question was regarding, it was tinged with a little bit of wishing for things to be as they were, not exactly as they are now. Sometimes it has to do with meeting or seeing something from the past, but most of the time it has to do with general nostalgia — wanting innocence, wanting things to be as easy as they were when you were a kid and didn’t have all of the things pressing on you from the world. It’s a really sweet card.”

CROSSING/AFFECTING YOUR QUESTION – Seven of Swords
“Swords have to do with mental, intellectual activity. It’s everything having to do with making decisions and having clear thoughts. In the image, this guy is taking his swords and taking them out of town — kind of sneaking them on out. What that represents is some decision or something that you have done that you have done unexpectedly — nobody expected you to do this. It doesn’t have to bet big — it can be a small matter — but you did it with stealth. You’re holding something back about not telling everybody in regards to some decision.”

WHAT COULD COME TO PASS – Five of Pentacles
“Pentacles have to do with financial gain and earthly rewards. It is the money suit. In this image you can see these people are walking through the snow, and so it represents the poverty card. It primarily represents financial poverty, but it can also represent poverty in other areas of your life. The main thing about this card is the feeling of lack-of. Sometimes, as you know, you feel you are lacking even when you have a lot of money, or feel you are lacking even when your relationships are good. What may come to pass, regarding your question, is that you’re not totally fulfilled monetarily. But, being in this position doesn’t mean it’s a given — it’s just something to look out for.”

YOUR DISTANT PAST – The Magician
“This is a great card. He has all off the suits: the pentacles, the cups, the sword, etc. What The Magician represents is mastery over life. In your distant past, you had your life completely mastered. It was on a path and you were able to drive the chariot. You knew what you wanted, and when you wanted something you could do it. You were the star of the movie of your own life, and had everything under control.”
***
YOUR RECENT PAST – Five of Cups
“Again, cups have to do with relationships. In this image, he has three cups knocked over while two remain standing. It represents disappointment in relationships or love — in this case, recently. But, it also represents being able to realize what you still have left in your relationships. Obviously, you’re not happy about what transpired, but you’re able to move forward recognizing what you still have.”
***
YOUR FUTURE – The Star
“I love this for your future card. This is The Star, and she is hope. She is your spiritual guide. People take that however they want to. I like to think she’s like your fairy godmother. She’s the kind gal where if we didn’t have her, we couldn’t continue on. She definitely represents a future of hope and having in all things. She is a beautiful, beautiful card. And again, a great card to represent your future.”

WHERE YOU ARE RIGHT NOW – Six of Pentacles
Again, pentacles have to do financial, earthly gain. This is called the generosity card. It is a two sided thing — being able to give financially and being able to receive financially. Not always financial, life is not always about the financial things, but in this case mostly. It’s about being able to give to someone of yourself as well as receive. It’s harder for most people to do the receiving and it’s very, very humbling.”

HOW OTHERS PERCEIVE YOU NOW – Three of Swords
“This is an interesting one. Again, swords have to do with intellectual prowess and mental type clarity. It’s obviously a very sad looking card, and is actually sometimes called “the sorrow card.” Right now, other people perceive you as having had sorrow. The nice thing about this card is that it represents reaching the end of a cycle. But sometimes, when something is completely done, you don’t even realize it until it’s clear here (she touches her head), clear here (she touches her heart), and can absorb all of that. It’s really easy to say “yeah, yeah, yeah” in your mind intellectually, knowing something is over and done, some phase of your life is completed. But until you accept it completely — heart and head — you cannot enter into a new beginning. Whether or not you’ve come to terms, other people see that you have accepted sorrow and are at the end of a cycle — that you have got this.”

HOPES, FEARS & DREAMS – Seven of Cups
This is a pretty good spot for this card to be. In this image, he’s got all this stuff — everything he could ever hope to wish for. The world is his oyster. But, he can’t focus on exactly what it is he wants. So, it’s called the daydream card. But the beautiful thing about this card is that most people don’t have all of these options to even have the option about being hazy. So though it’s a call to focus, it’s a good card.”

YOUR FINAL OUTCOME – The Devil
The Devil. This is the one people get intimidated by. But the devil is within. It’s thought patterns, addictions, cycles. No one else does this to you but you. So, it’s being able to realize we have The Devil within us all. Falling into the same cycles over and over and over again, that is a thing of The Devil, and in our minds we put the worst limits on ourselves. Not able to being able to see clearly is a terrible thing. As soon as you’re able to look at things with a new perspective, you’ve broken that. So this is a final outcome you need to recognize so it’s not a final outcome. And when you have bad patterns like that, you need to know what to do otherwise.”
