The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center (NVMC) is launching its annual Hero Awards to honor individuals who reflect the values of the Nisei. The inaugural Courage and Leadership Hero Award–with a trophy and $1,000 check–will be presented at the NVMC annual dinner on Nov. 4 at the King Kamehameha Golf Club.
“The Nisei Veterans hold a special place in our community’s heart,” said Brian Moto, President of the NVMC. “These brave men [and women] volunteered to serve their country even as their loyalty was questioned. However, they proved their loyalty on the battlefields of Europe and the Pacific, becoming the most highly decorated unit in the U.S. Army for its size. We want to honor the ‘everyday’ hero and perpetuate the values of the Nisei Veterans–the catalysts for this award.”
Applications for the inaugural Hero Awards are now being accepted. Applications are available online at Nvmc.org and are due on Friday, Oct. 14. The award application is open to all residents of Maui County. Awardees will be notified in October; and they will receive the award at the Nov. 4 Nisei Veterans Memorial Center Heroes Dinner. The awards are sponsored by HouseMart and Miyake Concrete. The award application is open to all residents of Maui County.
This year’s dinner theme is “Finding the Hero in Yourself.”
NVMC’s mission is to ignite the potential in people by inspiring them to find the hero in themselves through the legacy of the Nisei Veterans.
The Nisei Veterans Memorial Center is a nonprofit organization that aspires to a world where people act selflessly for the greater good.
