This Saturday, the Four Seasons Resort is inviting the community to participate in Global Wellness Day. This makes sense, because Four Seasons Senior Spa Director Pat Makozak is passionate about wellness. In fact, some of the best health wisdom I’ve received has been from her.
“Drink lemon in warm water to start the day,” she says. “Lemon has the necessary electrolytes the body requires first thing in the morning and also assists in alkalizing the system. Lemon also assists in the detoxification process and makes the liver’s life a lot less stressful.”
Makozak has turned her self-care vision into a partnership with Executive Chef Craig Dryhurst and health professional Dr. Mark Emerson by offering a program at the resort called “Wellness Your Way.” The team can concoct personalized health, fitness and wellness routine for individuals. This Saturday, you can sample your own way around a wellness routine with meditation, yoga, fitness talks, a trunk show featuring lululemon athletica and healthy treats from the culinary team.
“Wellness is a strong focus at Four Seasons with chiropractic, acupuncture and nutritional analysis offerings,” says Makozak. “The road to wellness can be long and winding but it starts with one day, and that one day can change your whole life.
Global Wellness Day began in 2012 in Turkey. Belgin Askoy of Richmond Nua Wellness-Spa started the event. It’s a day that centers around awareness and pledging whole body wellness. The idea is to take the pledge on the second Saturday of June and build a healthier lifestyle over the long term with seven key steps: walk for an hour, drink more water, do not use plastic water bottles, eat organic food, do a good deed, make a family meal and be in bed by 10pm.
“We all want to be healthy, look good and live a good life, both physically and spiritually,” says Askoy. “Four Seasons shares these values and we are thrilled that they are supporting this worldwide initiative.”
For Maui’s Wellness Day, meditation starts at 8am. Yoga instructor Brenna Miles will lead the lululemon yoga class at 9am.
Dr. Mark Emerson will also lead a discussion about body care, nutrition, fitness and hopefully touching on a few of the cold laser body services he provides at the spa.
As part of the whole wellness initiative at Four Seasons, new Executive Chef Craig Dryhurst offers a complete healthy menu by request at Duo and Ferraro’s. He says exploring flavors and dishes for his wife and daughters inspired him to create the menu. The Wellness Menu offers Dryhurst’s own unique take on raw, vegan, vegetarian and pescatarian dining.
“We have a Kale and Strawberry Salad with agave lime dressing, fresh citrus, steamed tempeh and Kula strawberries that is on our Wellness Menu,” says Dryhurst. “The entire Wellness Menu, in fact, is nutrient rich. I collaborated with our Spa’s clinical nutritionist to provide some truly healthy options.”
The menu also lists ingredients and how they benefit the body, as well as what some of the terminology means. It guides diners with line items like “Hearts of Palm–virtually fat free, helps promote nervous system” and “Omega-3 Fatty Acids–found in foods, fights inflammation.”
The special menu is available during dinner. The resort also offers kama’aina discounts–20 percent off the entire bill at dinner for DUO while Ferraro’s discount is buy one entree, get one free, again at dinner only. At lunch, Ferraro’s offers another limited wellness menu, plus power and green smoothies.
The resort offers unique activities like stand up paddle board yoga twice a week, as well as aqua cardio, yoga, circuit workouts, tennis clinics, pilates, spinning and outrigger canoe paddling.
