There are more ways than one to wake up in life. When that metaphysical alarm goes off, where will you turn? There’s really only one place on Maui to stand under a stargate and that vortex is at Awakening in Paradise in Kihei.
“It’s a metaphysical bookstore,” says owner Judy Levy. “It’s Maul’s only independent bookstore. I used to be a school teacher and books are passionately important to me. I believe they are part of our intellectual freedom in this world. I’m not a fan of that ‘A’ company. We call it that ‘A’ word in our shop. We are a healing center as well. We have got books and items for purposes of keeping the sacred at the center of life. All sorts of books for upliftment, improvement and health and permaculture. I’m also a farmer. I’m big on the sustainability issue on the island.”
Awakening opened six years ago in Haiku at the Temple of Peace but moved to Kihei two years ago.
“It was a big job getting people to come to Haiku,” says Levy. “I wanted to serve more people. I knew originally that I would be best to be in Kihei but the third night we came to the island I met the folks at Temple of Peace and they wanted me to launch there. Ultmately I needed to be where more people are so I could help awaken. That’s why we are called Awakening in Paradise. ‘Cause that’s what’s going on on the planet. We see the microcosm of it here.”
The shop is celebrating two years on the Southside with 14 days of specials, sales and events, starting with a talk this Thursday by Food Revolutionist Oceans Robbins, the founder of Y.E.S. (Youth for Environmental Sustainability). Ocean and his father, John Robbins–the author of Diet for a New America of the Food Revolution–co-founded the Food Revolution Network. Then on Saturday, Awakening’s psychic health fair starts at 11am. Louise Lambert will play live music 7-9 pm.
On Sunday, special rates on readings start at noon, and there will be health demonstrations, too. On Tuesday, Naia Newlight talks about gender inequality and tapping unknown potential in “Our Future is Female.” Then on Thursday, Dr. Joe Marshall will speak about living genuinely in “Living Your Empowered Life.” And for Saturday, Aug. 22, the shop holds open house for the practitioners starting at 5pm; Bentley Kalloway & Keith Ranney will also play live music.
“We have about 20 to 25 practitioners in the Awakening Ohana,” says Levy. “We have some of the most gifted readers and healers on the island. They love to work with us because people come to find the metaphysical shop. It’s a spiritual boutique; we have menu of holistic services. We have fun clothing, different things than you see anywhere else on the island–jewelry, a lot of local art. We really love supporting unique artists.”
Besides daily intuitive readings to gain access to inner knowing, the Awakening Network can hook you up with angel therapy, personalized astrology, past life regression, reflexology, biofeedback, spiritual counseling, human design reading, chakra balancing, shamanic healing and more. The shop has a little something for everyone, from aromatherapy oils to crystals to handmade jewelry. Levy likes to share her own unique path to metaphysical spirituality.
“Basically, I lived in Europe and I was teaching overseas with my first husband when we separated and I came back with my sons,” says Levy. “I did a few things, and I worked in my dad’s business for a bit. Ultimately I met my second husband, I was at the right place at the right time. I was the third person in the country to start ladies home parties selling sex toys really quality sex education. I transformed my elementary school teaching into being a sex educator for 35 years. I had the first elegant love boutique stores which were a big success. Along the way, I got on my spiritual path so I had a metaphysical store next to one of my love boutiques. That shop still happens to be functioning in L.A.”
From that foundation Levy has built her metaphysical gyre in South Maui, where she hosts talks from experts on topics like feng shui and sacred geometry.
“Awakening to me means that we are each different beautiful sovereign beings and we believe that we are all expressions of the divine,” says Levy. “This is not a religious concept, it’s a spiritual concept. We are each perfect and wonderful in our own way. We are all getting better. It’s that awareness of we can step away from the programming on the television and we can tune into our own intuition. We have all the answers we need. We don’t need to listen to movies or the news because it’s on the box. We need to do our own thinking. We need to be sovereign beings that want to make a difference on the planet. It’s not about being sheeple, it’s about waking up and being your own unique person.”
At the end of August, Long’s Shopping Center will lay new sewer pipes under the store, so the shop will be closed throughout September. For more information, call the shop at 808-891-1114 or drop by 1215 S. Kihei Rd.

Our Future is Female: How Women (& Men) Will Save the World ~ Tuesday, August 18th, 7-9pm. The threat of nuclear war, the next extinction level event, climate change and economic enslavement, all point to the unsustainability of our current trajectory. With all of humanity’s advances, why can’t we achieve peace and prosperity for all? The underlying cause of our failure might be gender inequity. Women are our most underutilized natural resource. Past societies which overcame war and poverty were governed by legislative bodies similar to our own, with one difference– the existence of a fourth house, consisting of post-menopausal women only. Following this historical precedent, how can we restore women’s voice in government? And, can we do it in time? The vision in this manuscript is enthralling & hopeful; come meet Nai’a Newlight and share your thoughts and hopes for our future.
Dr Joe Marshalla returns for another brilliant evening “Living your Empowered Life, Part 2” A RETURN COMMAND PERFORMANCE Thursday, August 20th, 6:30-9pm Dr.Joe Marshalla, internationally known teacher, author and one of the founders of our SHAKA movement will be presenting another inspiring heartfelt evening of deep considerations, laughter and tools to begin to truly stand in your genuine, authentic self.
