The basic info on yourself and spa or salon:
New to Maui, I recently transferred from our Fairmont property in Singapore and will oversee the launch of Fairmont’s new word class Willow Stream Spa in December 2013.
When did the spa/salon open?
Spa Kea Lani has been operating successfully for 15 years with some of the best therapists in Maui, many of whom are still with us today!
While we will be soon closing this chapter, we are excited about launching a fresh new product with a full scale Willow Stream Spa opening in December 2013.
What is the square footage of the spa or salon?
Our current spa is approxamately 4,000sq ft. The Willow Stream Spa will more than double in size to 9,000sq ft.
What are the amenities in the spa or salon?
Currently we have 9 treatment rooms and 3 amazing outdoor cabanas.
Willow Stream Spa will at one time accommodate 18 treatments, plus four manicures, and four pedicures. There will be a private men’s and women’s lounge/locker room, a co-ed lounge area and unique water showers and mud experiences.
How many years experience in the industry?
9 years
What got you started in the spa, salon or wellness industry? When was this?
Having studied Psychology as my undergrad I took a strong interest in Health Psychology but wanted a career that combined both my interest in mental and physical wellbeing along with my entrepreneurial talent.
After living in Japan for one year and fully immersing myself into wellness practices, I was inspired to embark on my entry into the booming spa industry. I decided to take a management diploma in health sciences in Toronto to get myself up to speed with running the business. …that was 10 years ago and I’ve loved every minute of it since!
Please give me one fitness tip:
Using moves from fitness classes I designed, I pick up a set of 2kg free weights at home and turn on some of my latest ITunes to get working on high repetition moves for my upper and lower body. 30 minutes a day of weight resistance combined with cardio will do wonders to help build lean muscle and keep your cardio vascular conditioning up!
What is your personal favorite spa or salon therapy and where and when you indulge in it.
I love a great shiatsu massage – My first was in Japan and I have loved it ever since. The focus is on pressure points through mostly finger techniques to open up energy flow, improve blood and lymphatic flow. I find this experience a great mind body release. Drink lots of water after!
Best skin advice, spa or salon treatment and fave product for a 20 something:
I would recommended using a good cleanser and moisturizer with spf to prevent damage that will only appear in later years. Avoid drug store products that tend to block pores and irritate, making skin more prone to breakouts.
Best skin advice, spa or salon treatment and fave product for a 30 (the new 20):
Use a good serum (consider it a vitamin for the surface of your skin) and eye cream to reduce the appearance of the fine lines that start forming and of the loss in elasticity in your skin. Exfoliate every 2 days for a healthy glow. I love my Mia Clarisonic, a must have for anyone (guys and girls) at any age.
Best skin advice, spa or salon treatment and fave product for a 40 something (I know we stopped counting a decade ago):
Signs of aging are more noticeable, embrace it! This is when your skin will show more signs of sagging and uneven skin tone.
Get facials regularly – and the best one I have experienced yet? …K Lift. Developed in part with NASA research scientists, this facial technology is a three in one energy system used to help contour, infuse concentrated ingredients to the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate collagen production. It’s noninvasive and it will be available at our new Willow Stream Spa.
Best skin advice, spa or salon treatment and fave product for a 50 and up:
Try mild cleansers (creamy in texture). Use an antioxidant rich serum under a broad spectrum moisturizer. Skin tends to be dryer into our 50s..
In addition to regular facials, continue with a good retinoid.
Overall what you put on top of your skin is just one part of looking your natural best. Inner peace, optimism, love and your nutritional program will surely make you look and feel your best.
Please name your most popular retail item and what it does.
My personal favorite is Serum C by Kerstin Florian.
It’s key ingredient is a Vitamin C+ Complex (Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate) A high potency complex that delivers pure Vitamin C to skin, helping to boost collagen production and enhance skin’s structural support. This Vitamin C+ Complex is 50 times more active than standard Vitamin C. Helps to provide antioxidant protection against free radicals and improve skin firmness. Helps brighten skin by reducing the formation of melanin and preventing the appearance of age spots. Anti-inflammatory.
I feel like I had a facial every time I use it. Fantastic results!
