How many years experience in the industry?
I started my first business, Mitusa Designs (coin purses, cosmetic bags, and tote bags) about 4 years ago.
How did you get your start in the Fashion Design and/or retail industry? When was this? Did you have any formal training?
I spent about a year in Chicago 4 years ago. It was a very cold and snowy winter, and I spent a lot of time indoors. I wanted to occupy my time by learning a new skill and expressing my creativity. Sewing seemed like the perfect way to do this. I took a few sewing classes at a little fabric shop, and also spent a lot of time reading books on the topic picking the brains of people in the industry. I am still learning more skills everyday.
How did you manage to launch your own fashion line?
I launched my line with a lot of hard work and perseverance. There were times that I felt very discouraged, but I continued to push forward.
What is your philosophy of design?
Simple and clean lines. Fresh.
Where do you draw your style inspiration from? Who is your favorite style icon?
I am inspired by nature and the beach – flowers, ocean, trees. I like to include functionality in my design.
What is your signature style?
Simple and clean lines. Solid colors with bold or patterned accessories.
Tell me about your collection. What makes your line (and/or retail store) stand out from the crowd?
I choose the fabric and color combinations very carefully. I applique each hat, and pay very close attention to every detail.
What is your favorite piece from your collection?
I love the gray hat with teal, patterned Maui!
What shapes and styles are found in your clothing designs?
Island shapes and island style, with function.
Please tell me about the textiles you use in your designs. Any specific fabrics and colors that you love to work with?
I like to use fabric that appears to have texture. My favorite color to work with is teal!
Do your designs feature upcycled textiles? Tell me about how you obtain them and your process.
I do not use upcycled or vintage textiles at this time, but different types of textiles, including upcycled and vintage, will definitely be a part of Oneloa’s future.
If we took a peek in your closet, what would we see? What is your ‘can’t live without’ item?
A nice black tank top. It can be dressed up or dressed down – worn to the beach with a jean skirt or layered and accessorized for a night out.
What is the staple clothing item or accessory every woman on Maui be sure to have?
A good hat:) It’s important to keep the sun off your face. Also, a good pair of earrings!
Tell me your top 5 styling tips.
A good tinted moisturizer is a simple and easy way to instantly brighten your face.
Beach hair never goes out of style.
Comfort is key.
Biggest fashion no-nos?
I am big into clothing being comfortable. If an article of clothing is uncomfortable, it is a “no-no” in my book.
